The standard LCMS line on Luther since the 80s or earlier is that he was a product of his time and had no idea what he was talking about. Calling the Reformer an out-of-touch grandpa is how you help kids "dare to be Lutheran", you see. Clearly, this approach has led to the rapid growth of the denomination that we see today.

Decades ago, before overturning Roe v. Wade was a twinkle in anyone’s eye, I want to say sometime during the Clinton years, there was a study that got a lot of attention in the media about abortion reducing the crime rate. No D batted an eye. Have to go back and remember that episode.
