My life changed completely when I was 24, working as an accountant, and studying economics. My former boss didn't know, but he was the trigger for my 180-degree turnaround.
There I sat in the hot office in late June 2014.
My boss took me out for lunch. We talked about cases, his young daughters, and family.
I wasn't feeling well that day.
The summer semester of my studies had already ended, and I was exhausted. The exams were tough, and I hated every bit of it.
Accounting, bookkeeping, economics, finances.
All important subjects, I thought.
But to me, it was just learning for the sake of learning.
I remember complaining to my boss about the last semester. He said something that changed everything for me:
"Even if things get rough, as long as it makes sense to you, push through it."
A week later, I quit my job and my studies. I realized it never made any sense to me. All I was looking forward to was working 60+ hour weeks, getting nice but not great pay, and retiring at 65+ if I was lucky.
No, thank you.
My boss was shocked when I quit; he didn't see it coming.
It must have been even harder for him, since he wanted to encourage me to push through.
I never looked back.
I started my own web design business, explored e-commerce and book publishing, and worked as a supply chain manager for store owners. These are experiences I still draw from today.
I have to thank my former boss for this, who is now my accountant and tax consultant.
