August is when this year's bat pups start to reach independence. They've left the maternity roost, they're learning to hunt, and they need every insect-filled night they can get before hibernation. A single little brown bat can eat up to 1,000 insects in an hour. A pup still learning the job needs that density to survive its first winter. Here's what you can do right now: Unplug the bug zapper. Every moth and beetle it kills is a meal the pup doesn't get. A University of Delaware study found mosquitoes were 0.22% of what bug zappers actually kill. The rest are the insects bats need. Turn the porch light off. Bright lights pull insects away from the dark areas bats hunt in and disrupt their foraging patterns. A light off at 10pm returns thousands of insects to the night and gives the bats somewhere to do their thing. Skip the yard spray this month. Broad-spectrum insecticides applied in August gut the insect populations the pups are learning to hunt. A young bat that can't find enough food in its first weeks of flight doesn't make it to spring. Put up a bat box. A properly installed box, south or southeast facing, full sun, 12 to 15 feet up on a pole away from trees, can attract a colony within a season or two. The pups dispersing from maternity roosts right now are looking for exactly this. The bats are out there every night doing work you benefit from directly. August is when the next generation is learning the job. Make it easier for them.

Accuracy: how close a measurement is to the true value. Precision: how repeatable a measurement is, regardless of whether it's correct. A scale that consistently reads 2 kg heavy is precise but not accurate. A scale that reads the right weight on average but varies wildly is accurate but not precise. You need both. They are not the same thing.
