The impact of the transatlantic slave trade has been felt by generations of Black communities. It’s vital that our public spaces reflect London’s heritage. That’s why today I’ve announced plans for a new memorial to honour the victims of the transatlantic slave trade.

Uncomfortable, but necessary conversations ahead about what the new memorial will be, and how hundreds of thousands of enslaved Africans should be remembered in this capital city they helped build.

It’s shocking that London doesn't yet have a dedicated memorial to honour the millions who suffered and died as a result of the slave trade. Today we announced a UK first—a memorial to commemorate the victims of a dark chapter of our history. 📺 @BBCLondonNews
