@jaredrethman, Founder of World House and @wpsignal, on how WordPress still relies on cron jobs and polling. Real time systems enable instant updates, faster interactions, and a more responsive user experience. A shift that could redefine how WordPress performs at scale. Episode out soon. Stay tuned. #WordPress #WebDev #WPSignal #WPLegends

A new database table isn't going to fix the performance or UX or RTC. The only solution is WebSockets. Unfortunately WS is far outside the traditional WP stack. Fortunately there is a way, its called wpsignal.io a performant Rust based WebSocket relay capable of delivering sub 50ms events.

A new database table & transients aren't going to be enough to fix the performance and UX. The only thing that would make RTC usable are WebSockets. Luckily there is a way without changing your host or infrastructure. Its called @wpsignal a high performant Rust based WebSocket relay.

The WordPress 7.0 release team is working to finalize a new database table design for real-time collaboration before a new release date is set, with versioning still unresolved heading into the Easter break. therepository.email/wordpress-7-0-…

@jeffr0 Performance and UX are severely impacted by HTTP polling transport layer. The only real solution is to use WebSockets. Luckily this can be solved without changing your infrastructure by using a WebSocket relay. wpsignal.io is a real solution to this problem.

I think Real Time Collaboration should be off by default and then individuals can toggle it on via their user profile, like they can with the block editor. core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/64845

@SethRubenstein @learnwithmattc @therepositorywp The performance cost of RTC is routed in the transport layer, this uses polling to keep collaborators in sync. Essentially hammering the server for updates every second (resulting in empty responses 80% of the time). @wpsignal is a real solution to this problem.

The architectural changes needed to support RTC have been underway for many years now, the entities system, wordpress/sync, etc. This work has been ongoing for quite some time, it's much larger than the recent flurry of activity we've all seen in the last few months. It's a 3+ year project and it's been part of Core for some time already. The page-building space outside of Core is extensive, yes, and yet none of the save for one (which I have not used so I can't speak to its performance) offer multi user RTC. I think it's safe to say if it were actually possible to offer up RTC with high performance as some sort of bolt on and not as something baked into the editor itself someone would have done it by now. All that said, even as the biggest cheerleader for RTC, the UI for it should be 100% off by default. The masses don't clamor for security or revisions necessarily either, but it should be present out of the box.

Multi-Collab is plugin territory. And Core's got bigger fish to fry. I wrote this piece for @therepositorywp but it was informed by chats with a lot of folks in the WordPress space, even within Automattic. If you agree, add your comment to the blog. therepository.email/wordpress-coll…

𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗲𝘁 just got approved on WordPress.org. You might know us as 𝗪𝗣𝗦𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗮𝗹, but WordPress.org has a rule against plugins starting with "wp", which is understandable. So WordSocket was born, and honestly it has a nice ring to it. After months of building, testing, and a few too many late nights, true realtime for WordPress is now one plugin install away. 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗲𝘁 brings WebSocket support 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀. No separate server, no complex infrastructure. Site owners can push live updates, events, and notifications to connected users the moment they happen, not after the next poll cycle. 𝗪𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗬𝗷𝘀 𝘀𝘆𝗻𝗰 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗿, 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘃𝟳 𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗼 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗮 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗼𝘅. If you've ever wanted realtime on WordPress without rebuilding your stack, this is it. Install it today: wordpress.org/plugins/wordso… Docs and getting started guide: wpsignal.io/docs/getting-s… Instruction videos coming soon.
