@wrljet

I'm into all things mechanical, electronic, microprocessors and software, retro-computing, cars, engines, machine tools, CNC, etc. And love to reminisce.

Hello Mr. Jones: We ran into a little problem while changing your oil ! While working as an automotive technician over my long career, I have seen accidents like this or similar happen quite often. Usually caused by improper lift set up by technician in a hurry or a technician had previously disabled the lift safety locks. My tip of the day: Before taking your vehicle in for service anywhere, take dated photos of your vehicle so you can prove it was not damaged before they serviced it. Some shops will try to deny that they damaged your vehicle and simply say it was like that when you brought it in.

@PcPhilanthropy Maybe I should spring for the pro next time. I take a lot of pictures of circuit boards and small mechanical parts, and it’s hard to get decent shots.

@wrljet I hope they fix the macro on the upcoming phones. The 15PM had the best macro. Since then, even the 17PM seems to have a harder time focusing on the subject and blurs too much of the composition

@2170cell Older friend recently told me I was like a 15 year old girl with my Apple Watch and phone constantly beeping and dinging. I told him, hey, it’s my fan club.

The gmc Yukon that I put a new transmission in is back. Luckily, not for a transmission issue. It was towed in. Engine cranks over but won't start. Testing found the fuel pump driver module bad. Common problem ever since they introduced this driver module.

I post a lot of nature photos in hopes to inspire others to become curious, slow down if only for a moment and appreciate the natural world around us we often take for granted. A world of mysteries and intricacies that without, would swiftly bring about our demise…

@macona @willyiamm I know a guy who filled a trash bag with oxy-acetylene mixture, sparked it off, and lost an eye. Talented machinist, otherwise. Actually thinking about it now, I know two people who touched off those bombs.

@Blackfingers63 @Woopmoder When I started my first real full time job, near a downtown, I met people who didn’t like cars, didn’t own a car, didn’t have a license. Total mind-blow.

@2170cell My father was always telling me I was maintaining an attractive nuisance with my hobbies. And we’d get sued. I grew up with a very healthy disrespect for authority.

More tales of an old mechanic: Customer came into the Firestone auto center I was working at requesting an alignment on his fully customized Chevy truck. But he had one stipulation and that was that only he would drive his truck and no one else. Store policy was that customers were not permitted to drive vehicles into the shop. But this customer was able to convince our service manager to make an exception. Our alignment rack was the pit type with flat drive on ramps. I was in the pit trying to guide this custom truck that had an obviously camed engine racing like it was on the drag strip. When all of a sudden the truck lurched forward and jumped over the ramp stops. Seeing this monster coming towards me I jumped fully into the pit. Truck is now fully into the alignment pit over my head and completely trapping me in a very small space! I discovered that day that I did not like being trapped at all, but there was no way for me to get out. It took several hours for our manager to find a company with a boom truck that could lift that truck out of the pit that day. They did pass me a sandwich and bottle of pop in the meantime but it was not an enjoyable couple of hours for sure. They gave me the rest of the day off and I went fishing. Caught three big Trout. Just another day in the life of a mechanic.

I am an old mechanic and for semi retirement I think I will open a new quick lube shop. And to keep prices low I am going to follow the business model of many restaurants and chain stores today. First you will need to pull up to a self self kiosk and talk to an AI which will take your service request order. Then grab the handy bar and QR code scanner and scan the code on the side of your drivers door so the AI knows what model and year car you have. Then scan your drivers license so the AI knows who you are. Just like some restaurants there are no prices on the menu board, as we use something called dynamic pricing which allows us to change prices at moments notice due to possible price increases. But for the latest oil change price you can use your cell phone and scan the QR code on the menu board. This will display the latest pricing along with liability disclaimers. Please note the final charge will include a 25% tip for our workers for we only pay them minimum wage to keep our prices low for you The AI will then assign a door number for you to drive you car into when prompted. After pulling your car into the service bay, a worker in the pit will drain your oil for you. When the light in front of you turns green you can then exit your car and fill your engine with the oil your ordered at the kiosk. If you also ordered a new oil filter, a filter wrench and disposable gloves will be at your work area to use. Don't forget to reset your oil maintenance reminder. If your unsure how, there is a handy I Pad available for you to "Google it" Start your car and follow the arrows to the pay station where you can use your credit card or Bit coin to pay your bill. The garage door will open when transaction is successfully completed. Thank you for visiting "Do it yourself Oil change" Be sure to follow the 15 texts we will now send you everyday informing you of our latest specials. Now aren't you glad this is fictional made up shop? Yet we are being expected to simply accept this sort of thing in many businesses today.

@FrankBr05713205 @KateBishop4321 The friction material on the brake had worn down enough that it effectively made the shaft too short to hold the rest of the parts.

@FrankBr05713205 @KateBishop4321 It took quite a while to figure out what was wrong with the thing. People selling this old Maytag stuff used on eBay. Unexpectedly expensive.

Ten years in this house. We set it on the foundation. Three dishwashers, second fridge, fourth washer, second stove, second microwave, still first dryer, really tired of disposable appliances. Old deep freezers still going strong but new ones take a dump after a few years. 😑

@FrankBr05713205 @KateBishop4321 My Maytag washer is about 25 years old. Broke down. Needed a new brake drum. Can’t buy new. I figured out I could machine about 0.1” off of another part to compensate for the wear. Put it in the lathe. Fixed. Been working two years since.

@FrankBr05713205 @KateBishop4321 This is a disappointing aspect of being older, and having experienced this downfall. Younger people don’t know that the current situation doesn’t have to be this way.

the crash of '29 did not necessitate soc sec at all, the crash was already 6 years in the rear view mirror, and FDR policies did little to spur the economy. the war did that. what soc sec and other "new deal" programs did was create a government dependency in the public, and that was good for generating votes.
