I received another disappointing un-fundable score for my @NIH grant today. I am privileged, and I realize no-one wants to hear me complain. Just sharing to make the point that everyone experiences this kind of feedback, and that it never stops from stinging! 1/3

@markmccarthyoxf Congratulations Mark. They are incredibly fortunate that you are joining them.

@infoecho As I recall I had quite a few applications/uses for strobe sequencing. They didn’t resolve to good memories.

@katherinelove__ @matthewherper @forbeshealth He had very good fact checkers to compliment his great writing.

Because of the topics’ complexity, I felt lucky never to factcheck for @matthewherper & @forbeshealth but so respect your 18.5 years’ work. Thank you and good luck!

Some personal news. After 18.5 amazing years at Forbes, I am leaving. In January, I’ll start as Senior Writer, Medicine at @statnews.

@matthewherper Did not see it coming either. It makes things very interesting potentially. We are huge fans of long reads and this seems to increase competition in that area. New developments will be interesting.

Suprise, genomics folks! $ILMN is buying $PACB for $1.2 billion. I spoke to CEO Francis deSouza about why. #6651b8da7c78" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">forbes.com/sites/matthewh…

@matthewherper Matt, I’m reminded of a long ago quote by Jerry Garcia, “what a long strange trip it’s been”.

When I started covering biotech Celera Genomics was at $274 a share and Nathan Myhrvold said it would buy Merck someday. Craig Venter and Jonathan Rothberg, both genomics entrepreneurs, were both briefly billionaires. The genomics sector of that time was largely sold for parts.

This. I don’t mean to poke fun at the person responding to @bradloncar ‘s lament other than to note that stocks do go down, sometimes violently. The olds know this.

@KMS_Meltzy I haven’t read it recently, but it’s well worth it. I think it was the first genomics paper. doi.org/10.1016/0022-2…

@KMS_Meltzy @bryan_howie Congratulations! The dark and light sides are very relative. Plus, ASHG and AGBT are in need of better parties.

@ewanbirney @skathire Very nice history lesson and perspective on the research, Ewan.

There has been a (mainly healthy) debate on Twitter due to @skathire + colleagues excellent paper in Nature genetics on Polygenic Risk Scores for disease which made the broad press in US, UK and elsewhere I think

@herdyshepherd1 Farewell, you will be missed as an island of calm and good sense.

@girlscientist Thanks! I’m happy to help! Although I’m not sure about the videos. 😀

@girlscientist I was staring at him and he said, “do you think that’s too many slides?” Yeah about 85 too many. So yeah, 42, sounds like good. 😂
English

@girlscientist I was giving a talk in Japan that was being translated on the fly into Japanese. As I was giving the AV people my actual slides I notice the speaker after me with his slides. We both had 30 minute talks. He had two slide carousels, one full, the other almost. About 110 slides.
English

@sheacshl Although probably not as bad as crimes against humanity, so there’s that.

@KevinADavies @NatureGenet @SpringerNature Having had a few papers in volume 1 this makes me feel old. :). Congrats though, well deserved milestone!
