@MarioNawfal France defaulted on $4 billion of debt owed to the United States in 1936. That would be $9.4 trillion today.

🇫🇷🇺🇸 France just pulled all its remaining gold out of the New York Federal Reserve. 129 tonnes moved from U.S. custody to Paris vaults between July 2025 and January 2026. All 2,437 tonnes of French gold reserves are now entirely in France for the first time since the 1920s. France says it's "not politically motivated," just upgrading to modern standard bars. But the timing is notable given global tensions and the Iran war. They also made €13 billion profit on the swap due to rising gold prices. Source: @mining

Iowa farmer says this planting season the price of fertilizer has shot up so high, “She's now facing her toughest year yet as a farmer” “For the amount of fertilizer I was gonna buy. It had gone up about $13,000 in 2 days” “Iran's closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical transit point for a third of the world's fertilizer, sent the price soaring the cost of two widely used nitrogen fertilizers shot up by 20-50% in the first few weeks” Farmers say they are looking to lose roughly $58,000 and margins are already very thin

@Lfc_chris321 @dose_of_Close @Aris_Utensil In 2025, the U.S. exported about 10.7 million barrels per day while importing approximately 7.9 million barrels per day. We export expensive light crude and import cheap heavy crude which we refine for a profit.

In 1968 Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia all voted for George Wallace not Nixon or Humphrey. In 1972 every state except Massachusetts voted for Nixon. In 1976 every southern state except Virginia voted for Jimmy Carter. 20 years later, they were still willing to vote democrat.

@ofcrdeonjoseph @DapperDomo "Southern Democrats / Dixiecrats" did that. After that those people slowly moved over. The Dixiecrats and their underlings became Republican. That much is clearly documented.

@AugieNash My dad took me to see Stan Musial play one of his last games at the old Sportsmans field in September 1963. My dad first saw Musial play in 1944 when the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the St. Louis Browns in the World Series. Baseball was all about the game back then.

Idea that seems too obvious to be true: The best things in life really are free. We just spent spring break at my brother’s farm in Kentucky. I’ll admit when my wife suggested it, I felt a little skeptical. Last spring break we blew it out at an amazing resort in Cabo. The kids loved it, we had a blast. A part of me was worried that they would feel cheated out of an exotic trip. And if I’m really honest, it wasn’t about them. A little part of me felt cheated out of an exotic trip. But 20 minutes after we landed, I realized how silly that was. The cousins mobbed my kids, ran off in a pack, and didn’t stop for the next five days. My son (13, the oldest cousin) taught the little kids all of his fishing secrets at their pond. They caught 23(!) fish in a single day, his new record. They spent all day outside, canoeing, exploring, climbing the waterfall and catching frogs. My wife and I spent the week having thoughtful, honest, deep conversations with my brother and his wife. The kind that only take shape with space and stillness. We talked about raising children, midlife crises, spirituality, politics, AI, and countless other things. We don’t agree about everything, and we don’t need to. Here’s the point: I didn’t miss the resort and my kids certainly didn’t. They’re pretty sure this was the best week of their lives (with a little childlike recency bias). And this doesn’t mean I’m swearing off resorts for farm life. My fancy side is still alive and well. The point is noticing the story: “An expensive resort in a faraway place must be better.” Once again, I was reminded of a lesson that I’ll likely get to keep learning for the rest of my life: Everything you could ever want is right in front of you, if only you are willing to look.

@cowbroker A better scale would be returned on investment. I figure it’s about 10% whether you raise livestock or invest the stock market. Only difference is the stock market doesn’t require much labor.

I'm looking into the statistics of the time, and we simply cannot fathom the kind of crushing poverty our ancestors suffered through. Their sacrifices were inestimable. Most people simply do not realize how good we've got it in modern times.

In 1895, the typical Westerner lived on less than a dollar a day—absolute poverty, by today's standards. People were brutally poor for almost the entire course of history. It's only recently that we've escaped those circumstances. And we cannot take that for granted.

Anybody old enough to remember seeing this on a vehicle? Early car radios used vacuum tubes which required high voltage for the plates of those tubes. That high voltage was made by use of a "vibrator tube" functioning as a high-speed mechanical switch that converted a car's 6-volt or 12-volt DC battery power into a pulsating current. This allowed a transformer to step up the voltage to several hundred volts. Worked well except that vibrator could be heard buzzing while the radio was on. Sometimes that was annoying.

When Charles de Gaulle led France, he treated public money as something untouchable. At the Élysée Palace, there was a strict rule for him: no personal expense could ever be paid for by the state. His wife, Yvonne, kept a small notebook in which she meticulously recorded all family expenses — from food and electricity to clothing and even soap. At the end of each month, she would send a check to the state treasury, reimbursing every last cent. Once, an accountant remarked that this was not really necessary. She calmly replied: “Everything that is not public is personal. And for personal matters, we pay ourselves.” This principle applied without exception. Their children and grandchildren were not allowed to use official cars for private matters. De Gaulle himself refused any privileges of office: he paid his own bills at the palace — even for the smallest things, such as soap or family meals. Moreover, he did not use his presidential salary, living only on his military pension. After his death, there was no wealth or luxury left behind — only a modest house in Colombey-les-Deux-Églises, purchased before the war. It is said that he would sometimes personally send money to the treasury if he suspected that any personal expense might have accidentally been covered by the state budget. This was not a formality. It was a principle. ✨ An example of true integrity, honor, and responsibility in public service.

@wilson_dunham_f Just like raw milk, unwashed eggs will last longer without refrigeration. Only unwashed eggs can be used to store them by the water glassing method. Eggs will keep up to six months without refrigeration.

I understand the conundrum / different approaches to washed & unwashed in egg hygeine. What I didn't realize is that the - often criticized overly regulated EU - and much of the rest of the world has taken the completely opposite, minimalist approach. Ironic.

I learned yesterday that in the USA egg washing is essentially REQUIRED to sell commercially and they must be refrigerated. (With some exceptions) In the EU however egg washing is essentially FORBIDDEN and eggs are sold commercially off the shelf at room temperature.
