I think there’s an irony, in that the bible itself practically starts with a scenario of “how humans know good” that is unrelated to “knowing god”. Eating the “Fruit of Knowledge of Good and Evil”. Someone was able to parse out some wisdom from the story that can be applied to secular contexts. Basically, when they ate it and “realised they were naked”, if you think about what it means to feel naked, it’s to feel vulnerable. In other words, to know evil is to know how you can be hurt, and by extension how to hurt others. To know good is to know how to make up for the weakness of yourself and others. Half the reason I bring this up is because bringing up that story could become be a rather stinging rebuttal to the ones who claim that you need to know god to know good. The other half is that, unpacking the story like this demonstrates a good reason why the Japanese have such good morality without Christianity. They live in an incredibly fickle environment that forces them to be aware of how easily they can be harmed by natural forces, and basically have to rely on each other to withstand that. Helping protect each other thus becomes expected, and piling on more troubles than what they already have to deal with is viewed with even more scrutiny than in places with more stable environments.
