At the base of it all, @deadbitnation is a digital pixel art project, that references several layers of human cultures and subcultures.
What started from a single digital image of a skull, downscaled into a 32x32 pixel grid initially, finally flipped horizontally and enlarged to a 36x36 pixel.
The personal challenge was to squeeze as many 'implied' details within those grid limitations by pushing around pixels of colour manually, in a format suited as PFPs for the web3 age.
500+ traits across the spectrum, referencing everything from boomer to Gen Alpha narratives, classic historical and modern pop culture. Music, fashion, politics, movies, tv, web3, memes, anything iconic that would translate well into pixel art, all built over the course of more than 3 years since I started.
Each piece is randomly generated with traits and over 50+ 'rules' made to match both aesthetically and narratively. Once generated, all 3,333 pieces are manually curated, and further edited and customized. I try to ensure there are no 'ugly' ones, unless when they're really hilarious and pokes fun at our overall narrative.
30+ custom 1-of-1s, of iconic figures, personalities and characters. Some even 'transcend' the pixel grid, into full resolution renders even.
When Tut pitched the idea of turning this whole project into a singular brand IP that goes just beyond it being 'art', it gave us the opportunity to expand our strategy from just a pre-mint, but also to include a more sustainable post-mint one.
Creating an ecosystem doesn't always mean turning your IP into a metaverse or game. In Deadbits' vision, the ecosystem begins with its art, and hopefully the rest will fall in place.
I am not going to pretend to know what's going to happen when we launch, but I couldn't have done it without the help of Tut and the rest of our team, as well as the teams from @megaeth and @rarible and the various communities that we've engaged and taken from.
Couldn't be more excited to release these Deadbits into the wild, it's been 3 years running!
