People often ask how I find the next crypto gem. As you know, I look for on-chain data. But in a broader sense, I also try to understand today’s challenges so I can identify tomorrow’s opportunities. When I read the post below from @MTorygreen, where he talks about the importance of redundancy, it really resonated with me on a personal level. I’ve worked nearly 18 years in IT risk management and cybersecurity. Redundancy, failover, backups, and vendor independence are principles we live by. The biggest risk isn’t just technical failure; it’s dependency. When a single entity controls the grid, the data, or the model, the entire system becomes fragile. I’ve seen clients collapse because they weren’t prepared for that. One outage, one compromised vendor, or one over-centralized dependency, and the entire operation grinds to a halt. That’s why decentralized AI resonates so strongly. Recent research shows how concentrated AI has become: ➤ 90% of notable AI models now come from companies rather than universities (up from 60% in 2023) ➤ U.S. investment reached $109B, which is 12× more than China ➤ Three cloud providers control 63% of all AI infrastructure This is exactly the kind of centralization that creates catastrophic single points of failure: 1️⃣ Model concentration The "brains" of AI are controlled by a handful of private companies, not distributed across open research. If those companies fail, get acquired, or restrict access, entire categories of capability disappear overnight. And even more scary - people don't even realize they're being shaped too. 2️⃣ Geographic concentration One country’s policy change, sanctions, or political instability could halt AI development worldwide. It is like running all your data centers in a single earthquake zone. 3️⃣ Infrastructure concentration Most AI runs on AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud. When they go down (and they do), two-thirds of AI goes dark. These companies are literal gatekeepers controlling who gets compute access to train models. It is not just a technical risk; it is a control risk. We have already learned these lessons in infrastructure the hard way. Electricity powered machines. DeAI will power minds. But only if we build it with the resilience principles we already know work. Many people reading this will probably think, “Who cares?” Honestly, I used to be one of them. But understanding these patterns of dependency is exactly how you spot where disruption starts. The same way the internet decentralized information and blockchains decentralized finance, DeAI will decentralize intelligence. And those who see these structural shifts early tend to find the real gems before everyone else.
