@MyNameIsntEffy @Local_Seelie Yes. And that if you have one attitude towards conscious things deemed inferior that are subject to great suffering, you are more likely to have the same attitude towards other things in that category.

@xapwtf @Local_Seelie So the comparison is that slaves and animals both possess consciousness deemed inferior and have suffered a lot? (Again being genuine, I think I get what you’re saying)

@MyNameIsntEffy @Local_Seelie Which of animals or black people do you not think are / have been part of a class of consciousness deemed inferior that has suffered a lot? That's the category they are being claimed to both fall into, which they obviously do.

That’s a direct comparison, though. You’re comparing two things that make sense to compare (two instances of giving money to strangers). Slavery and eating meat are not in the same category and have nothing to do with one another. One is over and beyond worse than the other. Eating a burger does not mean you would be cool with having a slave. Even using a proxy to compare the two in any way, shape, or form is irresponsible IMO

@MyNameIsntEffy @Local_Seelie What is being compared is people's attitudes towards the "suffering of a class of consciousness widely considered to be inferior". It is saying that if you hold one attitude (towards animals), you are more likely to have held another attitude (towards black people)

@MyNameIsntEffy @Local_Seelie I can say "people who give money to beggars are more likely to give to organised charity" without saying anything at all about whether it is morally better to give to charity than to beggars. It's not an ethical claim

@MyNameIsntEffy @Local_Seelie I don't know how I can be more clear. That simply does not follow. The claim could be true for any hypothetical value assigned to slavery and animal agriculture

@MyNameIsntEffy @Local_Seelie There is a comparison, but not of the ethical kind that you've implied. It does not follow from Aella's claim that slavery cannot be worse than animal agriculture

@MyNameIsntEffy @Local_Seelie You could think that there is some ordinal difference in value which means that 1 human life is worth more than any number of animal lives and still make this claim

@MyNameIsntEffy @Local_Seelie Aella's tweet patently doesn't make any comparison between the badness of slavery and meat eating

@xapwtf @Local_Seelie No. That tweet says that a good way to tell if you’d be cool with having slaves is if you’re cool with eating meat. How is that not making an equivalency?

@libpol_org @MichGul1987 @mimi10v3 @morallawwithin Thinking moral progress is inevitable seems a little optimistic . And if you do think moral progress is inevitable, then what you've said amounts to "tescreal is correct", which doesn't say much to anyone that isn't already a believer

@MichGul1987 @xapwtf @mimi10v3 @morallawwithin TESCREAL is, at any given moment, just future mainstream beliefs adopted decades too early. Almost everyone in developed countries in the distant future is going to be a vegan who talks about AI a lot.

@KanakoThe3rd I'm explicitly not talking about the deep runs - it's just funny to talk about Vega's numbers of domestic wins when all but one of them was during his time on a team comprised of 3/5 owl winners playing in a (then) plumber region

@DevinGoure This is true - in fairness if I had read it at the time of publication I probably wouldn't have been so impressed. As an undergrad I couldn't imagine reading it without the B&H commentary - it's only because of them that I am able to enjoy his idiosyncrasies

I am also one of the few people who truly loves Wittgenstein's writing style in PI. But I also think that in order to understand the philosophical significance of that style, you have to grasped it as a the product of a *failed* attempt at writing of another sort.

@Dgkalx1267 @OliverJia1014 Nobody has “good ideas but can’t write” because actual writing is where all the quality comes from. Non-writers overvalue ideas to the extreme, like you’re doing now. Ideas are the cheapest and most easy to acquire part of writing. We do NOT need AI slop of everyone’s ideas

@Aella_Girl Someone who sustainably hunts wild game for their protein has a less negative impact on the earth than someone who buys nuts/beans from factory farms. And the animal lives a natural life.
