I worked at a Suncoast from 2003-2007. We were the largest distributor of anime in the area at the time.
I won't say all or most of the "otaku" customers were cringe, but the ones that were... Jesus Christ.
It only got worse when we added the "Hentai" section in 2005 (see photo)

Should an anime be 100% faithful to the manga, or do it's own thing?

@retrocelestial It’s the same i feel for the manga. To me both Rin-ne and Mao are just copy of Inuyasha. It doesn’t feel original for me. It doesn’t feels like it is it own story.

i feel like any excitement i had for the mao anime dissipated when it was announced that sunrise was making it… although i did enjoy the first 2 episodes, i feel no sense of urgency or excitement to watch it like i do with the ranma or uy remakes…
