I’m in a constant state of apathy right now.
My husband grew up actually starving. His parents never fed him. He pulled fruit off trees to survive. He once chewed laxative gum because it was the only thing in his kitchen pantry. He had one kind teacher in school who paid for some of his lunches. He was put into California foster care, which wasn’t any better. His caretakers defrauded social security and took out benefits in his name for their own personal use.
He worked full time construction starting at age 14, before school. He became an emancipated minor at age 16. He worked for his own better life. He didn’t take government welfare. He worked to better his own situation.
I look at these 250+ lb highly capable workers screaming that they’re starving without their food stamps and I’m apathetic.
I see them complaining about boxes of free food they were given that were donated by people probably not much better off than they are, packed by volunteers donating their unpaid time to others. I’m apathetic to this type of thinking.
I’m tired of the takers who give nothing back. I’m tired of people working the system to get the things they think they deserve from others.
I’m apathetic.

I don't think the ACA was going to get fixed in less than a year no matter what we planned to do.

🚨JUST IN🚨
U.S. Border Patrol agents were performing immigration enforcement near 26th Street and Kedzie Avenue in Chicago, Illinois, when an unidentified man in a black Jeep opened fire on them and sped away.
An undetermined number of agitators also hurled a paint can and bricks at the agents' vehicles.
The Chicago Police Department responded to the call for help and secured the area.
The shooter and his vehicle are still at large.

@BarExamTutor I don’t find it at all tough to blame the law school graduate. He took an ethics class when in law school and made a choice. I teach associate degree legal studies courses and we talk about this all of the time. At some point there need to be severe consequences for this.

1: A law school graduate who has not yet passed the bar exam is writing the briefs for this law firm. The law firm submits one of those briefs written entirely by the law school graduate to the 9th Circuit.
2: The law graduate used AI to help write the brief. Tough to blame the law graduate: that's a lot of pressure so early in one's career.
3: The lawyer arguing the case doesn't review the work submitted by the law school graduate to make sure that the AI hasn't made up cases that don't actually exist in our physical world and instead only exist in the digital world inhabited by non-human AI's.
4: The judges are very confused by all of the above. They ask the lawyer to explain.
5: The lawyer tries to explain and his explanation is that before submitting the briefs, nobody checked the citations.
6: The judges are still very confused.
Uncomfortable to watch.

@CynicalPublius I agree with you on student loans. They allowed administrators to jack up tuition IOT expand bullshit degree programs and the administrators to manage them. Two of my three kids in their 30s and still paying.

RE: Student Loan Burdens and Young Americans
A resounding theme across X lately is that the current economic system is not fair to young Americans. So much of that is deeply structural and is not easily resolved. But some things are a simple product of bad laws and can easily be turned around. The student loan situation is one such thing.
I know I am going to get creamed for what I am about to say, but the student loan debacle has been deliberately unfair and has been a massive wealth transfer from young penniless Americans to fatcat Democrat university administrators and bankers. It has been resoundingly unfair to those Americans just venturing out into the adult world, saddling them with crippling six-figure loan balances. But here it comes: we need to solve this going forward and have federal tax dollars repay some portion of those loans as a way of fixing the injustice.
Yes, I know you can go through my timeline where I endlessly ripped Biden for his student loan forgiveness efforts, but the difference here is that my proposal fixes things going forward too, and Biden wanted to just “forgive” loans while otherwise keeping the status quo on the whole system.
So here is my proposal:
1. Gather a group of genius economists and have them calculate/model what tuition would have been without federal guarantees, do it by state, by year, with a public/private split analysis. Whatever the spread is between what tuition should have been versus what it actually was, forgive that amount on an individually-calculated basis using the economists' state/year data.
2. End federal guarantees of any student loans in the future.
3. Make new student loans dischargeable in bankruptcy.
This proposal introduces some level of fairness for those who been harmed by the corrupted system (which is good politics), but more importantly it destroys the system that created the problem in the first place. Without federal guarantees, lenders will be much more discriminating in who they lend money to, which in turn will drive down school enrollment, which in turn will cause schools to lower tuition and introduce efficiencies into their bloated organizations.
It’s a win-win. Of course none of this works if all you do is the pay-off part, and I would absolutely oppose #1 above if it was not accompanied by #2 and #3.
