从我出生一直到八、九岁时，我父母都一直分居。我四岁之前跟我母亲过，四岁之后（即我大妹妹出生后），我开始跟我父亲过。 所以，我四岁前的照片都是跟我母亲照的，没有跟他们两人一起的合影。 我的英文自传（在这里 allenandunwin.com/browse/book/Je… ）中有一句话，说我1981年跟随父亲（father) 来到绵阳， 出版社的英文编辑二话没说，就将这句话中的「父亲」改为「父母（parents)」，她以为我英文不好，弄不清楚「 father 」和 「parents 」的区别。她想当然地以为，要从一个城市搬迁到另一个城市，那当然是全家一起去啊，哪有只跟父亲走的？ 没办法，我花了好久时间跟她解释中国的户籍制度和编制问题，她瞪大双眼听了半天，虽然同意把 「父母（parents)」改回为「父亲（father)」，但我觉得，她还是未能真正理解中共国这一套反人性的制度是怎么回事。在她看来，这简直是天方夜谭，匪夷所思…… 是的，我长到八、九岁父母才调到一起，，但没过几年，我十四岁上初中时，他们又分居了，到我离开绵阳去北京上大学后，他们才又调动到一起，我母亲还被迫改行了，不然还得继续分居……
