Body repatriations remain one of the few verifiable metrics. As of today, Russia has returned roughly 25,500 Ukrainian bodies since 2022, while Ukraine has returned only about 3,500 Russian bodies. The ratios have been extremely lopsided (1:37 in 2025, 1:21.5 so far in 2026). This reflects battlefield control far more than any claimed kill ratio. Open-source tracking confirms the scale: UAlosses (the main Ukrainian open-source project documenting confirmed deaths from public records) has verified ~91,500+ named Ukrainian soldiers killed as of spring 2026, plus ~95,000 missing. This is already well over 3× many official figures and it is a known minimum. Wartears (a Russian-aligned project using statistical modeling) currently estimates ~852,000 Ukrainian killed as of mid-June 2026. Independent and open-source analysis points to a realistic range of 450,000 – 750,000+ Ukrainian soldiers killed, with ~600,000 appearing as a reasonable lower-bound estimate when accounting for severe under-reporting. Additional indicators of the true scale: Ukrainian military amputees are estimated at 80–120k. Using adjusted ratios from modern wars, this points to 600–800k irrecoverable losses (killed + presumed dead among the missing). Early 2022 Ukrainian officials openly admitted daily losses of 100–500 per day. Even conservative extrapolation over the full war produces totals in the high hundreds of thousands. Ukraine is facing a severe manpower crisis: ~2 million draft evaders, at least 200,000 AWOL, forced street conscription by TCCs, exhausted units with no rotations, and repeated lowering of mobilization standards. A military suffering only light losses would not be operating this way. The data shows Ukraine has suffered catastrophic losses that official statements continue to downplay. Continuing this war of attrition serves no one except those who don’t have to pay the price in blood. It is long past time to end this and negotiate peace.
