@aarondfrancis Honestly, a mostly static UI having FPS like it's simulating a world in a game loop is the part that leaves me scratching my head every time I'm reminded this is an actual issue for React apps. :)

@lennysan No spotify? Might artificially depress your subscribe metrics... Would love to listen, but via a webpage doesn't fit my podcast listening schedule/habits...

Frameworks, metrics, strategy—yes, they matter. But the hardest parts of work are often the soft, messy, human parts we rarely discuss openly. The self-doubt, anxiety, the interpersonal dynamics that get in the way of actually getting things done. I'm excited to help change this. I'm thrilled to announce the pilot episode of "Is It Just Me?," a new podcast I'm exploring with executive coach, long-time product leader, and many-times collaborator @natatouille. Natalie has spent years coaching tech leaders through their toughest work challenges. Now, for the first time, you'll get to be a fly on the wall for these breakthrough conversations. Each episode features a real, vulnerable, unscripted coaching session with someone like you facing a work struggle. It's like Couples Therapy meets Lenny's Podcast. The first episode is live: isitjustmepod.com Let me know what you think! Important: If you want to hear more episodes, click the link above and subscribe. Your response will determine if we launch a full season.

✨ Big O ✨ Let me take you on a visual introduction to what big O notation is in my new blog post: samwho.dev/big-o. With big O notation you can better understand how algorithms will perform, finding orders of magnitude improvements with very simple changes to your code

@jasonfried Probably not a huge focus but maybe on how/if it works for teams of one (it does for me) and how it can be adapted for that scenario.

Working on the Second Edition of Shape Up and we want to make sure we're addressing common open questions, snags, or things people wonder about. Got any Q's you'd really like to see answered in the updated book?

I'm pretty much 100% migrated to the new butterfly place for social media now. I still read here occasionally but I'd love to connect with you over there instead. My profile is under @mattb.nz there. Find me and connect :)

@samwhoo fascinating perspective (that it sets expectations that readers might feel bad not to meet) that I never even thought of.... I've like them (and added them to my blog) because it gives an up-front indication of whether I have time to read something now, or to save it for later.

I actually agree with this. You might have noticed I quietly removed these widgets just from my visual posts. Been meaning to go and remove them everywhere. I got feedback from a few people that they felt bad it took them much longer to get through the post than the estimate.

📝 Opinion: When you put a reading time estimation widget on your content, I take that as an admission of so many things — including that you favor expediency over quality. blog.jim-nielsen.com/2024/reading-t…

@samwhoo you're sure it's not a directive to citizens on whether or not to festoon their streets?

The UK government publishes a list of public holidays as JSON and one of the fields is a boolean called “bunting” that appears to control whether or not the gov.uk website is adorned with bunting visuals for that day.

@samwhoo nice! very clean and understandable, would consider stealing the structure (I x.., I y.., ...) myself. As a little detail, I love the hover animations on the visualisation links, I literally spent 60s exploring them ;)

Today I learned about OData (@odataorg). Is this still a thing, or did it simply get crushed by GraphQL?

@danielwithmusic "...but it is now clear that this was indeed a Google Cloud bug." Agreed. But what is the bug? * Allowing a null parameter that defaults to a 1yr time-bomb? * Acting on the configured intent at 1yr without a grace period? * Both? Something else?

@danielwithmusic although it does very much sound like there were at least 1 or 2 concrete bugs in Google's control plane that provided at least some of the holes in the swiss cheese that had to line up. Very bad look. My takeaway: avoid 2nd tier cloud services like VMware private cloud ;)

@danielwithmusic definitely a weird/worrying event... in both the initial occurence, and the strange comms! Fault is such a hard concept in complex systems like this. No doubt there are contributing factors on both sides, any one of which might have prevented the outcome...

The public updates from UniSuper on their Google Cloud outage were light on details, so I did some research on how it might have happened, and speculate on who was at fault: danielcompton.net/google-cloud-u…

The reason nobody found this problem in dnssec before now is that, as they say, the fundamental design flaws were completely hidden by the superficial design flaws. lwn.net/Articles/96292…
