BREAKING: The US State Department just announced the “ceasefire”between I$rael and Lebanon will be extended by 45 days
It was agreed to extend the cease-fire for an additional 45 days, in conjunction with progress on the security and political fronts.
A formal political process has been launched, reflecting Lebanon's constructive engagement and strengthening the chances of achieving a lasting peaceful solution. The next round of meetings will be held on June 2 and 3, 2026, at the U.S. State Department in Washington.
The United States will facilitate and strengthen direct military communication and coordination channels between Lebanon and Israel through a security process scheduled to begin on May 29 at the Pentagon in Washington.
The parties committed to reviewing progress made with a view to extending the cease-fire again should the negotiations yield positive results.
The Lebanese delegation welcomes the results achieved today. The extension of the cease-fire and the establishment of a U.S.-sponsored security process provide vital space for our citizens, strengthen state institutions, and open a political process toward lasting stability. Lebanon will continue its constructive engagement in the negotiations, while preserving its sovereignty and protecting the security of its people.
The delegation reaffirms its full and unwavering commitment to reaching an agreement that restores Lebanon’s full national sovereignty and guarantees the safety and safe return of all its citizens. The goal is to transform the current momentum of the cease-fire into a comprehensive and lasting agreement, preserving the dignity, security and future of the Lebanese people.
Fundamental Principles of the Lebanese Position
Restoration of Sovereignty: Lebanon's absolute priority remains the restoration of the full and complete authority of the State over all Lebanese territory, guaranteeing the protection of borders, national sovereignty, and the security of citizens.
Return of Displaced Persons and Reconstruction: Lebanon remains committed to the safe and dignified return of civilians displaced to the South, supported by effective economic assistance and sustainable reconstruction efforts.
Release of Detainees and Repatriation of Remains: Lebanon continues to work towards the release of all Lebanese detainees and the repatriation of the bodies of those who have died.
Independent Verification Mechanism: To avoid the failures of previous arrangements, Lebanon insists on the adoption of a phased and verifiable implementation mechanism, supported by the United States, that guarantees the fulfillment of all commitments without infringing upon Lebanese sovereignty.
Lebanon is negotiating for a future where its borders will be respected, where its sovereignty will be ensured exclusively by the Lebanese Army, and where its people can live in lasting peace and security.
