I live in western canada and have no need to speak french. The few times I visited Montreal I got along just fine speaking English. Why should I learn a to speak French if I have no use for the language. I cant remember the last time I heard someone speak French here in the west and even all the Quebecers I have met speak English. Honestly I would probably be better off learning Hindi or Spanish. The thing is English has become a global language so there is very little motivation to learn another language. With smart phone translation apps that motivation is pretty much zero.

Its not one country when the most populated use there advantage in parliament to take advantage of less populated but resource rich regions it is a country divided by inadequate representation. A triple E, elected, equal and effective senate would have gone along way to leveling the playing field but of course roadblocks and foot dragging by guess who buried any chance of the west having equality when the Charlottetown Accord was signed in 1992.
