@EtchAic @LinkofSunshine and don't get me started on health insurance. you can't build buildings on your own land. we only just recently legalized prediction markets. the US is not an elegant example of capitalism. and it seems the reason it's not is because idealistic capitalism does *not* work

@EtchAic @LinkofSunshine but I think all of these countries aren't actually very capitalist, at least compared to what could be. especially in the US which I'm most familiar with we have corporate bailouts like every few years.

@TwinkRegimer @LinkofSunshine (I briefly looked at data here and did not find anything that clearly supports this claim) x.com/xsphi/status/2…

@EtchAic @LinkofSunshine not really. like first of all, capitalism is hard to define. if you define it rather simply but intuitively as low government spending as a percentage of GDP than everyone is getting capitalismmogged my mega-poor countries except maybe singapore

@EtchAic @LinkofSunshine but also China is kinda capitalist? it has less gov spending as a percentage of GDP than US, just worse property rights and shit according to heritage foundation. but also heritage foundation is a conservative US think tank so...

@EtchAic @LinkofSunshine now what does "success" mean? GDP I guess? but there's a lot of confounders so maybe GDP per capita growth works? Singapore and Irland are doing decent, Switzerland and Australia (and US for that matter) less so, but they all get mogged by China

@corsaren this video is very unrealistic. lifting with rockets just isn't going to happen, an orbital megastructure to do the lifting would be much more practical

@support hey can you fix the text box that you type tweets into being kinda broken now (Firefox 140.8.0esr on Linux, when you do ctrl-a to select text, it breaks the backspace key thereafter, errors in the js console; also other shortcuts like ctrl-c etc break, it's v annoying)

@cagedthecactus it's possible, but this ignores opportunity cost. I'm more likely to find a product (or other type of information/idea) that improves my life doing the counterfactual. if I actually valued finding good products highly, I would be reading consumer reports.
