These are really challenging times for academic medicine. You have to set your goals. If you want to be at the top of the field what matters is truly enduring contributions that help improve patient outcomes. Visibility, titles, fame are transient. Enduring contributions to your field or to the delivery of excellent care at your own institution will set you apart. Success in any field needs a huge amount of hard work, talent, perseverance, and yes, luck. You need to want to do what you are doing. Passion. Whether your efforts are in research, practice or education, what will set you apart is always hard work, talent, and perseverance. With that luck is more likely to be on your side.

What an amazing feat the @BalcoMedical team pulled off .. meeting attended by >1000 with almost 200 from india, 12 globally from australia, NZ, UK, USA, Lebanon, Switzerland, singapore. key tracks were mini Accord research workshop, communication skills with role play to train Oncologist into communicating prognosis and having end of life conversations with the patients and caregivers, radiotherapy contouring workshop, surgery workshop for head neck cancers. choosing wisely themed GIGU and lung Cancer, cancer prevention workshop, which mainly discussed HPV vaccine implementation, district level cancer prevention programmes. This was attended by state level, health officers and on ground level. Mitanin/Asha workers from Chhattisgarh. meeting was attended by 65 oncology students all over the country. Top 10 posters will be published in @ecancer . Looking forward to September 2026, .. have an amazing line up of @oncology_bg , ian prof Tannock, @prof_gina_brown @ajumathew_ @lateuwen and more ! Some mentors teach medicine. A rare few teach life. Dr. Bhawna Sirohi, my mentor, is one of them. Despite her international training and stature, she chose to return to Raipur—an underserved town—to practice oncology. That takes uncommon courage. This week, I had the privilege of attending the BMC Chhattisgarh Cancer Conclave 2025 that she organised at Balco Medical Centre. It was inspiring to see how she brings global standards of oncology to places that need it most.
