@yFactr

Most technologies lie dormant for a long time, ready to be invented by societies that aren't ready to invent them. Impatience is a virtue.

@Robotbeat Something I've thought about that I'd love to do, down the line when I am hopefully working on something even sci-fi hasn't really covered, is commission a few sci-fi authors to write stories to help show people what it's about

@SustainableTall They have a law in the UK mandating small windows on new construction, right? Google says it's motivated by a combination of safety and environmental reasons, both of which seem like a wrongheaded way to respond to those things

Left is a Passivhaus in Yorkshire Right is a new-build by Barratt Homes Small windows are not a result of Passivhaus performance (though they do need to be designed carefully). Small windows are usually due to cost!

These 46 affordable homes were built to Passivhaus standards on two sites in Harpurhey for local families, including 28 for Social and Manchester Living Rent.🌹 Both part of our Project 500 scheme with @ManCityCouncil to use our own land for more low carbon and social housing.🏡

@yFactr I maintain that Shuttle was f'ing awesome and until Spaceship is operational nothing since has come close to capturing its aura. A really under appreciated flying death trap.

@TheSMCoalition @wackawacka23 The problem with the Santa Monica model is that wealthy suburbanites cling desperately to their exclusionary suburbs, which makes the city expensive. Among the many problems of high prices, this creates homelessness; faced with the consequences of their choices, they double down.

The spiritual problem with LA is that every city wants to be Santa Monica

@wackawacka23 Hermosa and Beverly Hills have basically the same vision as Santa Monica, though granted their execution is worse

@yFactr I think Hermosa Beach and Beverly Hills are happy with their city and not at all want their city to be like Santa Monica.

@wackawacka23 Yeah, I think a lot of people want their neighborhood to look like Santa Monica but it would be better for the region if the aspirational model were a dense big city instead of a very wealthy, small, mostly suburban one

@coryfromphilly *no doubt there are engineering problems that will be encountered and solved and while many of these are going to be tricky they are undoubtedly solvable and that's not the issue we face in public policy

@coryfromphilly It's not challenging at all as a physical problem*: Build a bunch of stuff densely in a zone or a line along with transit infrastructure and people will take transit. Whether that zone is in Anaheim specifically is unimportant. The challenge is basically 100% political.
