What you're saying sounds good "on paper", but you do realize that most restaurants operate on an extremely slim profit margin as it is, right? This is one of the reasons that, in blue states that keep raising minimum wage, eateries of all kinds are going out of business right and left. For restaurants to get rid of tips and pay "fair wages", they would have to raise their prices by- a lot. If all restaurants did this, they would price themselves out of business real quick, because people would eat out far less frequently (which is already evident in states that have forced the mandatory minimum wage to keep rising- eateries are closing right and left). The restaurant industry is very different from other industries, because except for the most "exclusive" restaurants that only the wealthy can afford (which operate differently from other restaurants anyway, because the wealthy can afford to eat at them no matter how much they have to raise their prices), most restaurants depend on high customer volume in order to survive, and even then, profit margins are slim. It's also the industry that is most slammed by inflation when food prices rise- look at what's happening now with eggs, and think about how many dishes contain eggs, and think about what that does to a restaurant trying to keep prices down. It's why operating a restaurant is deemed one of the most "risky" businesses that exist. Restaurants are not like other businesses. The tipping system is a system that has benefitted both customers and restaurant owners, because it's a system that allows restaurants to try to keep their overall costs down, so they can make SOME profit, in an industry that has always surived on very slim margins. Keeping prices within reasonable ranges benefits customers, most of whom are not wealthy and will stop eating out if restaurants raise their prices. It's much cheaper to tip servers, than it would be to pay the prices a restaurant would have to charge in order to pay their employees $20 or more an hour. Also, refusing to tip employees who are anything but "wealthy" themselves is not going to change anything. It just makes the employee who is probably trying to make ends meet themselves (wealthy kids do not wait tables) suffer, not the restaurant. It's not a "flex", it's kind of a douche move, honestly.

I have a better idea: Tip based on how good the service was.
