I was standing in line at the grocery store when the cashier looked up and smiled. “Back again already?” I laughed. “I think you’ve got me confused with someone else.” She tilted her head. “No… you were here yesterday.” I told her it couldn’t have been me. I’d been out of town all week. She looked embarrassed and apologized. As I was paying, an older man behind me suddenly spoke up. “She’s right.” I turned around. He pointed at me. “I saw you here yesterday afternoon. You even helped me reach something from the top shelf.” Now I wasn’t laughing anymore. I showed them the hotel booking on my phone from another city. The cashier stared at it for a moment. “Then who was I talking to?” Curiosity got the better of me. I asked if they had security cameras. The store manager happened to be nearby and agreed to check. A few minutes later, he came back looking unsettled. “You should probably see this.” He took me into the office. The footage from the previous afternoon showed a man walking through the store. From behind, it could have been anyone. Then he turned toward the camera. Every person in the room went quiet. It looked like me. Not just similar. Identical. Same height. Same beard. Same way of pushing the shopping cart with one hand. Even the faded watch on his wrist looked exactly like mine. The only noticeable difference was that he paid in cash. I never carry cash. The manager asked if I had a brother. I said no. A cousin? No. Before I left, the cashier quietly asked, “If you ever meet him…” I smiled. “I’ll tell him he owes me an explanation.” She shook her head. “No.” “I just want to know which one of you remembered to buy the milk.” For some reason, that joke made the whole thing feel even stranger. Because everyone in that room had just watched a man who looked exactly like me… Buying groceries on a day I wasn’t even in the same city.
