A swath of strong opinions and indecision. And cats.

I've been volunteering at my local shelter to help socialize the more "spicy" cats. If you need a pick me up, enjoy this master thread of the furry residents:

@AlHendiify SAY. IT. LOUDER. That said, I guarantee many of them should be culled. I worked at a shelter that took in ferals. The number of them actively suffering by the time they got to us was so upsetting...

We don't even really have to cull ferals. We have more than enough money, resources, and space to permanently house urban and rural feral cats indoors for a generation while we change our culture around outdoor cats. We just aren't willing to spend the money on it

Today I was granted access to speak with incarcerated firefighters. They told me: - they hadn’t showered in 5 days - they were not provided regularly meals - they were working 24 hours in a row - they feel under appreciated and underpaid

Every time I feel a tinge of regret over leaving academia, something happens and I say "Nope! Nevermind." Today: a SATURDAY email telling me I need to find a new classroom for one of my labs, and how about the janky room in the basement.

@Jess_inthewild My delicate twinkle-toed sweet potato of a boy can't be arsed to even "roam" to his food bowl in the morning, he must be carried. I hate when people tell on themselves that they've never seen a properly cared for cat.

Except the “need” here is not “to roam” but to be mentally stimulated. Thats what you’re mistaking. Cats need enrichment - they do NOT “need” to roam the streets or your neighbors property in order to be happy - if you cannot understand this you shouldn’t own a cat

@dr_tgpeterson I recently found a set of blank business cards (they had a cute design, but no text), and I think they are the answer. You look put together for having something on hand to write down a note, and they never become obsolete because your job title or phone number or email changes

Me trying to explain Anxiety to a well-intentioned boomer: Anxiety makes your brain tell you small things are huge, you can't help it Her: I get anxiety too! Just not about small things. So close to getting it!

How are we correcting student's poor email etiquette without sounding aggressive? I like to think I'm pretty flexible, but spelling my name wrong, making demands (not requests), and sending multiple consecutive sentence-fragment-emails is a LOT

@Jess_inthewild @Morquine I wouldn't. I use her as a "what not to do" example in one of my classes, and I went to update my slides...I spent the whole rest of the day mad.

@Morquine Oh fuck how did I miss that square! I wasn’t aware of QOL problems but I also haven’t looked at her stuff in super in depth recently

Ok I consider this “final draft” - only caveat is ppl coming to “see/visit wildlife” is fine for properly permitted ambassador animals. I otherwise updated 2 others - supporting outdoor cats as a “wildlife” or “conservation” page is 🚩, as are mixed predator situations

@Jess_inthewild And for those who claim "cherry-picking," I ran the study for the entire year, and over 50% of the cats presented with one of the major enteric parasites. 75% presented with "general ailment" (parasite, virus, injury, illness, death)

@Jess_inthewild I'll never forget, I was running a fecal on a KITTEN for a shelter, and in the sample, I found rodent hair, and one of the worst cases of toxoplasma gondii I've ever seen. Another test, a cat showed rodent hair and TWO different kinds of worms. There's no reason for it...

If you don’t want to get bitten by wildlife, expose your cats & yourself to unnecessary illness, or have your cats die at a young age & have wildlife needlessly get mauled and die from sepsis and other injuries, you could simply *keep your cat indoors*

@TiffanyKWayne I do for my rent. I used to for bills, but the time it took the utility companies to cash them was ridiculous. It should not take 3 weeks.
