These were so successful at lowering rents that the city outlawed these within a few years over concerns from neighbors worried about parking (of course) and too much density. If the city council actually cared about affordable housing, they’d be clamoring to bring these back.

@mnolangray I think there's also an argument to be made that so much of their housing is old and nasty and they just want something that is new and not falling apart (abundant housing comes with this but may not be the primary driver)

I occasionally worry whether algorithmic feeds are just feeding me what I want to see, but I think there's a real cultural shift underway—young Americans increasingly want abundant housing, walkable neighborhoods, and reliable transit. They want choice!

@sergiopAnsel Good homes are still hot with multiple offers. But sellers can’t play around anymore with list price or they’re getting cooked with 60+ DOM

@ronpdavis Are these net gains (gains + layoffs) or just gains?

It’s more complicated than that up here. After COVID, the county jail stopped booking any property theft arrests (~all nonviolent misdemeanors), so cops stopped doing them because there was nowhere to take them. That’s changed a little but I don’t think totally. Jail still puts strict quota limits on inmates. Our police force shrank by about 1/3rd after COVID which mostly affected patrol officers, so there’s rarely manpower for anything not emergent. Even under moderate mayor previous term, he was very reluctant to use police power anywhere near homeless and got blowback whenever they entered encampments.

Go past any tent encampment and there’s always one that’s a bike chop shop. It’s absurd that we tolerate this but also, that criminal is not going to be a good neighbor to the other homeless folks either. these folks aren’t hard to find. Should be the easiest public order layup.

being a cyclist kinda sucks politically because your options are always Candidate A: loves bike infrastructure, but refuses to jail bike thieves Candidate B: wants to send bike thieves to the gulag, but hates cyclists anyway my bike was stolen last week, RIP

In order to make this work, you have to make it extremely cheap to permit and construct these panels and the supporting electrical infrastructure in urban environments. It costs more than the value of the electricity to do this today. Which climate change org wants to champion permitting reform?
Danielle Langlois@DanielleLangWa

“The US has an estimated 800 million parking spaces. Most of them are uncovered asphalt sitting in direct sun, generating nothing, absorbing heat, and contributing to the urban heat island effect in every city they're in. A 2023 analysis estimated that covering existing US parking infrastructure with solar canopies could generate enough electricity to power roughly half the country.”

every data center story says it uses "as much power as 100,000 homes" like that's a scandal. an aluminum smelter pulls five times that and it's why airplanes are cheap. measuring industry in homes is how you train a country to believe building things is a crime

@loganb Yeah, but have you thought about the impacts of junk fees? Surely those are more corrosive to affordable housing
