Enjoyed this video tour of the Las Vegas Loop. They’re building at $10M/mile. That’s 200x cheaper than Sound Transit. For the cost of Link Light Rail to Ballard, you could have a subway under literally every single street!

@loganb Yeah, Elon has an amazing ability to talk people into going along with his bullshit. The thing I read said their setup won't work. We'll see! Either way, is there a single example of adding lanes and solving traffic? Katy highway is up to 26 lanes and is a parking lot every day.

A subway for cars. Sure. I read part of the reason it's so cheap is they have none of the standard safety equipment so if a car catches fire down there everybody dies of smoke inhalation. Maybe that's BS? But, you're just adding road lanes. When has that EVER reduced traffic?

@loganb That’s not that good. Very limited capacity. Why don’t they use larger carriages like mass transit. People care about the boring technology not the Tesla inside the tunnel.

@engele Ballard was estimated at about $2B/mi while this costs $10M/mo. Small stations are ~$1M instead of ~$1B. Though it might actually be 100x since that’s the cost for a unidirectional tunnel.

@rob_mcrobberson You don’t drive your own car in it. Actually, it might only be 100x cheaper but the tunnels can be used in both directions so if you have, like 10 tunnels it doesn’t have to be 50/50 all day, giving more effective capacity.

this doesnt seem practical. 200 entrances and exits? how would that work functionally and i wonder if that would move more ppl than a train line? i’ve never tried the loop in Las Vegas, but I’m not allowed to bring my own car in there right? and I think the ventilation is only sized for EV’s imagine the congestion when somebody breaks down or has an accident in one of these narrow tunnels with no shoulder lol
