I want a brighter and more abundant future (than I had) for my son and others of his generation. That means building a lot more stuff in the highest opportunity places in the country.

This thread is such a perfect encapsulation of the "lead paint caucus" mindset: "When I was young, I had to choose between living in a lead paint filled shithole, moving to a sprawlburg, or uprooting my life and relocating to another city. And so should you!"

@aviel I’m surprised FSD in its current form isn’t getting more traction (I have theories), but I think this will be indisputably true once Tesla (or another car maker, I suppose) ships a version that allows you to look away for extended periods of time.

@jasonc_nc @nazzobetweeting Also, our wood houses are sooooo much better insulated than a stone or brick house. If you insulate a brick wall too much, water will freeze/thaw in the pores of the brick and cause spalling.

@Gulskjegg It was a shame the cache was small, but I was happy that the 1.5x speed boost was noticeable! 😊 And best of all, it was considerably cheaper than a Pentium 👍

During the peak era of custom PC building, people overclocked the Celeron 300A or forced it to run in a dual-CPU configuration—something that was supposed to be impossible. Those individuals were completely at the mercy of their motherboards, and they undoubtedly hold an extraordinary sense of nostalgia and deep memories from that time. #BP6 #ABIT

My toddler and I have this conversation every time we ride on Main St: Max: WHY TRACKS OUT OF SERVICE DAD? Me: Well, there used to be a street car here M: WHY NOT HERE DAD? Me: The City demolished its train shed so it had nowhere to sleep at night, so it had to go away. M: WHY DID IT HAVE TO GO AWAY DAD?? Me: Well, the city wanted to do an urban renewal project. 😭

Memorial Day weekend is the start of peak Alaska cruise season. Even here in Seattle, I don't think people realize how big the Alaska cruise summer tourism boom actually is. 330 vessel calls expected in 2026, catering to more than 1 million individual travelers(!!!), generating $1.2B in local economic impact.

@skaushik100 @loganb Do you mean the free shuttle bus? It’s back. It’s seasonal, but it runs between the Space Needle and the ID/Chinatown light rail stop, with several stops along the waterfront.

Do these douchebags at The Urbanist even think about what they're saying before they hit enter? After years and years of relentless hostility from activists and the political class, including our wonderful new mayor, now they're bitter that Starbucks finally decided they've had enough? I'm sure "regressive Tennessee" will be more than happy to be "exploited" with good jobs and new tax revenue from Starbucks. tinyurl.com/24ahyeb7

I find this pretty common. Opus is like "should I take a shortcut or be more rigorous?" and recommends taking a shortcut when the only cost to being more rigorous is that it has to write a few extra lines of code.

@curmudgeon_x @AFMBlog Bookmarking the heck out of that rec. The outdoor is the condenser (hot), the indoor the evaporator (cold). But it’s meaningless in the heat pump era because it reverses function to do heating.

@loganb @AFMBlog We didn’t have ductwork done except for adding the condenser (evaporator? I always mix those up and I sell them) so maybe that is part of it? We had Bob’s AC do the work because they said they’d pull a permit and we didn’t want to get hung up because the contractor halfassed it

My neighbor is replacing their HVAC system today. Their house is slightly bigger than ours. Total cost for everything: $34,000!!!!! What in the hell? He said they have tripled in cost since COVID. What a crock of crap.

Warren's war on crypto was a pure own-goal by the Democrats. It achieved nothing, and it cost them enormously by alienating a large fraction of a powerful group who'd previously supported them. Look at the change from 2020 to 2024.

To be honest technically Windows 95 was better than Windows 3.1 as it made the PC platform move from the 70s to the 80s, making the PC be only one decade behind others. But as the aim was to replace DOS fuck it. It also screwed the PC-98 platform in Japan so double-fuck it.
