🇺🇸🇮🇷 Everyone is treating Trump's naval blockade announcement as the next move in the war. It might just be a negotiating tactic. Here's why the skeptics have a point. The blockade has 4 problems that make it almost impossible to execute in full. 1st, oil. The only crude still trickling out of the Persian Gulf right now is Iranian oil moving on ghost tankers. Taking that off the market too pushes the paper price of oil toward where the actual market price already is, somewhere around $150 a barrel. That triggers a domestic inflation shock in the U.S. that hands Democrats the 2026 midterms on a plate. Trump knows this. It's precisely why he had no clean escalatory options before the ceasefire either. 2nd, the ships carrying that Iranian oil belong to China and India. Intercepting them isn't just an escalation against Tehran. It's an escalation against Beijing and New Delhi. Trump has a summit in Beijing coming up. He just threatened China with a 50% tariff for supplying Iran with weapons and then immediately walked it back. He is not in a position to also start boarding Chinese-flagged tankers in the South China Sea. 3rd, Pakistan. Countries that negotiated transit fees with Iran for Strait passage include the country that just hosted the peace talks Trump called "very friendly." Punishing Pakistan for paying Iran's toll while simultaneously thanking Islamabad for its mediation is not a coherent foreign policy. 4th, the Houthis. A full blockade escalation makes Houthi closure of the Red Sea significantly more likely. That removes another 12% of global oil flow from the market. At that point you're looking at $200 oil and a global recession that has Trump's fingerprints all over it. Here's the more likely read on what's actually happening. There are 9 days left on the ceasefire. Neither side has explicitly declared it dead. Iran's delegation called Islamabad "a foundation for a diplomatic process." Vance said the offer is still on the table. The blockade announcement came within hours of the talks collapsing. That's the timing of a pressure tactic, not a strategic decision. The real problem underneath all of this is the nuclear red line. Trump's original position allowed Iran to enrich uranium for civilian purposes. The zero-enrichment demand is Israel's red line, not Trump's. It killed the Oman talks in May 2025 and it killed Islamabad. If the US walks into the next round with the same Israeli red line, the same thing happens again. The most likely scenario is not a resumed war, but a frozen conflict where Iran keeps de facto control of the Strait without getting sanctions relief, the US quietly draws down, and the question becomes whether Israel decides to keep fighting alone. That's not a victory for anyone. But it might be where this is going. @tparsi
