Dr Emmanuel is a fresh doctor 2 weeks post housejob. He got a job in a private hospital in the mainland. 1 week morning duty alternating with one week night duty with only one weekend cover every month. He also covers another hospital when he's on night duty and free weekends. He's making a cool 700-800k in yotal every month. Dr Emma is a big boy. He's a happy Lagos doctor. Then one night everything went wrong. It was one of his night duties when he was woken from sleep at 2am that a lady in labour was just rushed in. He took a quick history in which the lady said she has been having some contractions since morning and saw some slight bleeding. The woman brought no ultrasound scan and the facility has no ultrasound machine. Dr Emmanuel misinterpreted the bleeding as show and examining her tummy, he detected only one contraction in 10 minutes. So he decided to take her to the labour ward for a vaginal examination. He put on the sterile gloves and put his hand in and thats when he felt it. He suddenly went pale and still. Rather than feeling the head, he felt his hand puncture a spongy mass and that's when it started. The lady started bleeding. Initially mildly and then torrentially. He knew he had made a massive mistake. He has done a vaginal examination for a placenta previa. Rookie mistake. Without removing his hand, he called his MD about what has happend and the nurses started preparing the theater for cesarean section. He informed the pregnant lady about what has to be done and got the consent. However, he had to keep his hand in that vagina for an hour while the theater was prepped and his MD arrived. By some luck, the baby and mother survived without any complications and the mother only needed blood transfusion. However, the husband inputted the whole scenario into Chatgpt who blamed the doctor for malpractice. The husband then refused to pay and threaten to sue the hospital but Dr Emmanuel paid the bills of the surgery to save his licence. Now what do you think about this story? Do you think Dr Emmanuel treatment was fair?
