This is an incredible tweet. I did not have a great father. I am better than my father is every single objective metric. In fact, some of you follow me on here due in part to how I raise my children (you’re all too kind) But how? Part spite, part learning what not to do but the largest part was THE MILITARY… I was very very fortunate to have a few “Father Figures” that I learned from. As @AJA_Cortes says in the tweet, I learned from strong men who LIVED experiences and modeled the behaviors. I didn’t have to read about it online or in a book. I could see it with my own two eyes. Now, I share those experiences with the men I am in charge of. I make every attempt to show them integrity, honor, character, work ethic, discipline, and kindness. I share stories every chance I get of personal failures and lessons learned from different experiences. You could say I “Father” them. I owe them that. And it’s not too late to start when they enlist, even if they didn’t have it at home. I learned how to be a man late, they can too. Men are physical/visual creatures, we must SEE what right looks like, we must FEEL the consequences of our wrongs. Be an example to your wife first, your children after that, and don’t forget to be an example in your COMMUNITY!
