Losing the FA Cup final felt like the fitting final act of that flawed project we’d been clinging to for years. It was never truly sustainable, and at absolute best, it might have delivered the occasional trophy like the Club World Cup, but never the foundations of something lasting. The fact that Xabi was essentially confirmed moments after the final whistle felt symbolic in itself - the closing of one embarrassing era and the beginning of another, hopefully serious era. That entire approach to running the club had reached its abysmal end. More importantly, Xabi would never have accepted the job without being promised genuine influence and control, and that alone is a massive victory for the club’s long-term future. Realistically, this was always the clearest route toward meaningful change in the short term. Now the responsibility is simple: back him properly, give him the authority to shape the squad in his image, and allow him to build something lasting with players who not only deserve to wear the badge but genuinely want to wear it.
