The Trump administration is doubling down on their strategy of ignoring reality. They want to pretend costs are going down when inflation is spiking massively and people are hurting.

Data centers are the leading cause of a 76% increase in the cost of electricity for America's largest power grid over just the first 3 months of this year, according to Bloomberg. The 13-state grid managed by PJM serves 67 million people, and costs have spiked this year. This time last year the cost of electricity on this grid was $77.78 per megawatt-hour. Now that cost has almost doubled to $136.53 per megawatt-hour. Bloomberg attributes that skyrocketing cost to the "booming demand from artificial intelligence data centers, which require vast amounts of energy and are putting a significant burden on America’s aging power grids." Americans’ wages are no longer outpacing inflation. Prices are now rising at an annual rate of 3.8%, the highest rate since May 2023. That means inflation is now outpacing wage increases.

From a butchware4gov volunteer: Voters who don’t vote their principles think that repeatedly supporting the “lesser-evil” buys us time to continue to organize for gradual systemic change in the direction of what the people are asking for, and assumes the lesser-evil choices will continue to get better until eventually we will get all our asks met - that they just have to convince everyone to stay on that lesser-evil track. This strategy assumes power will eventually concede willingly. Voters who vote their principles know that repeatedly supporting the lesser-evil teaches power that it never has to meet the people’s demands. It only has to make the alternative terrifying enough. Over time, the “lesser evil” options move further right and become more corrupt, while lesser-evil voters trap themselves into repeatedly consenting for the things they are most deeply against (which psychologically fractures and breaks a person and by extension a community). Principled voters understand that power concedes nothing willingly. I believe that principles are the laws of reality, that we cannot break principles, we can only break ourselves against them. Until our political strategy becomes to trust principles and align with them, then we will be broken and have no-one to blame but ourselves.
