According to the latest report from RFA, Chinese authorities have denied permission for Reyhan Kasim (right pic), the 86‑year‑old grandmother of 🇯🇵 Arfiya Eri (left pic), a member of the House of Representatives of Japan and Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs, to travel to Japan for medical treatment. This is exit ban. Reyhan has reportedly been “visited” by the police at her home during the past three months, and she was “interviewed” for hours during this visit. During the “interview,” it was mentioned that she “colluded with the East Turkestan independence forces and collaborated with anti-Chinese forces in Japan,” and that if Arfiya Eri’s actions continued, it would not be good for her relatives in Urumqi. Reyhan has reportedly not been receiving any visitors, whether neighbors or relatives, for the past month. rfa.org/uyghur/news/20…

According to @RFA_UyghurNews, Chinese authorities have detained and interrogated Reyhan Kasim, the 86‑year‑old grandmother of @eri_arfiya — Japan’s Deputy Foreign Minister of Uyghur heritage — in apparent retaliation for her principled and outspoken stance on the Uyghur genocide against China. The targeting of relatives of Uyghurs living abroad is a widespread and systematic tactic used by Beijing. This form of collective punishment is a textbook example of transnational repression, aimed at silencing dissent and spreading fear among the Uyghur diaspora. In this case, it appears intended to send a clear message to @eri_arfiya: to back away from addressing the Uyghur genocide and China’s campaign of transnational repression.
