Something is very wrong with the state education system. Almost every year, we get situations where blatant racism is present inside the school. In a recent incident, a teacher from Kerian has stirred controversy after being recorded telling a student to “go back to China” for struggling with Malay, later boasting it wasn’t her first time saying it. The incident took place at a SMK, where she doubled down on her biased remarks: “I’ve done it before, so have others—no one’s made a fuss!” “Sure, a 13-year-old not speaking Malay is one issue, but if the parents don’t either? They should just head back to China!” she argued, seemingly oblivious to the flaw in her reasoning. Is there political will to fix this? After so many years, so many different Education Ministers, and so many incidents, I think the answer is No. Teachers holding racist views should not be in the classroom but there appears to be plenty of them in government schools and they appear to be "protected" at the highest political level. On the day he returned to Kuching following his appointment as TYT by the Agong, TWJ held a dinner with all religious groups in Sarawak. It was a public signal that the TYT and the Sarawak Govt will maintain Sarawak's standing as the federation's state with the best interethnic and interreligious relations. More significantly, it sends a message to Sarawak's youth that multiculturalism is a strength rather than a political weapon as it is in Malaya. The establishment of UNIFOR by the Sarawak state government has really had an impact on interreligious relations at the official level. Sabah, and states like Melaka and Penang, should follow this model. #Sarawak #PoliticalCulture
