Most agent demos still treat memory as a text dump. The better pattern is graph memory + narrow tools + explicit failure contracts. @yxue06's obsidian-mcp thread is a good example: fewer generic read/write calls, more graph-aware primitives. Agents get useful when each step is inspectable, reversible, and cheap to retry.

@sidelined_cap Exactly! Tools shouldn’t just fail, they should tell the agent what kind of failure it is and what to do next.

This is the right direction. Going from generic read_file/write_file to graph-aware tools is exactly what makes agents usable on real vaults: less token thrash, better locality, safer mutations. I'd add one layer: failure contracts per tool (retry/escalate/stop) so bad calls don't silently cascade.

Most "Obsidian + AI" servers give the model read_file/write_file and pray. That breaks the second your vault hits ~1k notes.
