I got to see @santoshgnag's NJPLS keynote last week, and I can't stop thinking about it. It was one of the best keynote talks I've seen. Full stop. Let me explain what I think is cool about it.

It’s 2020 and students are rotating with me now. I feel the awesome responsibility of trying to impart something meaningful. I try to draw upon the wisdom of the many incredible teachers I’ve had along the way. The students will learn the science. It’s the art that’s elusive.

Told my daughter I was impressed she’s been diligently doing her homework, without even a mention of it from me, even though we’re on vacation. And she looked at me and said, almost disdainfully, “learning is everything.” Feeling pretty good about my life choices right now.

These three images show the code necessary to implement a simple effect for accessing the filesystem in my new effect library. They include the definition of the effect, an IO-based handler, and a State-based handler. This is 100% of the code, yet it gets mtl performance.
