The standard of government accountability in HK is actually lower than that in mainland cities. If this happened in the mainland, many heads in local government would roll. You don’t have to look for for examples (see thread below):
Kevin Yam 任建峰@kevinkfyam

Faster than one can say “national security threat”, the Hong Kong Police’s National Security Division has, in connection with the Tao Po Fires, arrested a university student who started a concern group and disseminated a leaflet with calls for (1) further support for victims; (2) an independent inquiry into potential systemic and corruption issues which led to the disaster; (3) reforms to the regulation of construction works projects; and (4) that officials who fell short in events/policies that led to the disaster be held accountable. Such demands would be considered the basic starting point in any democracy where such disasters have happened, and are not dissimilar to those demanded by @GrenfellUnited all those years ago. And yet in post-national security crackdown Hong Kong, one gets locked up for making such demands. Another irony in all this is that in Mainland China itself, it is now standard for local officials to be forced to step down after disasters, whereas in Hong Kong even just calling for official accountability can get you arrested for being a national security threat. WESTERN MEDIA, IT REALLY IS TIME YOU STOP JUST REPEATING HONG KONG GOVERNMENT LINES AND SHOWING INAGES OF GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS IN “MOURNING” PHOTO OPS, AND SEEING THE DISASTER AND ITS AFTERMATH FOE WHAT IT REALLY IS.

They aren't checking if members of pro-Beijing's political party helped covered the maintenance contractor. They aren't checking if the former Wang Fuk Court advisor, now a gov official, is negligent. Instead, they arrest the resident who calls for accountability. They want everyone in Hong Kong to STFU. Pathetic!

Hong Kong’s CCP puppets so terrified of civil society that they will not even let people assist fire victims, let alone demand to know why so many people died in a preventable tragedy.
Razven@RazvenHK

@inmediahk reports that HK university student Miles Kwan, who was seen handing out fliers demanding an independent investigation and accountability for the Tai Po fire was detained and taken to the police station. The online petition and related media has since been deleted.

7/ It also ignored reporting and prior whistleblowing about the widespread use of non-compliant, flammable mesh nets on HK construction sites in the previous year, as well as brushing off potential legal negligence of senior HK gov officials on the 2024 whistleblowing. (7/9)

6/ Instead of launching an independent investigation immediately (as the UK did after the Grenfell Tower fire), the HK gov announced on the following day it would accelerate the switch to (Chinese-imported) metal scaffolding without first completing a full investigation. (6/9)

1/ I don’t often speak in my professional capacity as a Hong Kong–born, UK-chartered construction professional (MRICS, MAPM, NECReg, among others). But I need to address inaccurate reporting about bamboo scaffolding in the Hong Kong Tai Po fire. (1/9)

For 4th straight year, Catholic churches in #HongKong will hold no masses for the dead on #June4. As recently as June 4, 2021, 7 churches held Memorial Masses for the Dead. Now the Catholic church can't even bring itself to say "June 4" in response to a media query. #六四36

“Inspired by Banksy’s subversiveness” tells you everything that is wrong with significant sections of the art world. Tbh Banksy isn’t subversive - he makes moderately edgy points in places where doing so carry no consequences apart from maybe allegations of vandalism. In short, significant sections of the art world want the cool that comes with appearances of subversiveness without the reality of or facing the consequences of it. This is unlike @badiucao, who has consistently been willing to live out his subversiveness in his art and his life, often at great personal costs. Some in the art world might counter by saying “oh but we supported Ai Weiwei too”. But Ai’s works were already worth millions when he was the son of CCP luminaries delivering edgy but (back then) safe-in-China messages. Would Ai and his works still have been supported by the art world if he was an enemy of the Chinese State from Day One? Judging by the experiences of Badiucao and others, I doubt it.
Melissa Chan@melissakchan

Italian art org claiming it's inspired by Banksy's subversiveness decides it doesn't like political artists after all — at least in Hong Kong. @badiucao's digital project yanked. He's called a criminal — even before city officials say so. Timothy Snyder's obeying in advance.
