Looking forward to discussing migration & geopolitics in Asia with an outstanding panel (@howlett_zachary @EliDFriedman @yyortiga)! I'll be talking about my book project on how the symbolic politics of Chinese diaspora engagement produces unintended and far-reaching consequences.

The project marries our interests in labor migration and agrarian change. It also tests our ability to work together as two academics who are literally married to each other

On Al Jazeera. The Philippines is cracking down on a migrant workers scheme launched by South Korea after discovering widespread cases of abuse and exploitation. More than two million Filipinos work overseas, earning money for family back home. But there've been more than 100 complaints stemming from a seasonal farming program tied to local governments in both countries.

Couldn’t make it to ASA this year, so our very own @yyortiga transnationally relayed my plaque. Beyond grateful for the recognition from @GATS_ASA! “Diasporic placemaking: The internationalisation of a migrant hometown in post-socialist China” Free link: shorturl.at/n2Nuy

It was a lot to take in. To be a scholar of, and a citizen of the world’s model for labor migration means having the grace to persevere when state leaders disappoint and problems persist at home. But I suppose the next step is to simply move forward. And to have hope 🌦️ 5/5

What were we thinking then? What could have been done better? Many of the presenters had also retired in recent years, so it felt like a passing of the baton to another generation of scholars...which I realize includes me 🥲😳 4/5

🇵🇭2024 is the 50th year of the Philippines’ labor migration program. Last month, I had the honor of presenting at two major conferences to mark the occasion. The first was an ambitious data summit, co-organized by Professor @rhacel and the Phil Department of Migrant Workers. 1/5
