Colonialism and imperialism are a pretty consistent topic of interest in Obsidian games. Pillars of Eternity is set in what's essentially a high fantasy renaissance version of Colonial America - it's a breakaway colony - and the sequel, Deadfire, my favorite game from the last decade, is set in a combination of the Caribbean and island Southeast Asia. It deconstructs white savior narratives while also not falling into Avatar noble savage tropes. Way more sophisticated world building than you see in BioWare games but also has more emotionally compelling characters than some other Obsidian titles. Can't recommend it enough, play it if you have any interest in RPGs.

In Fallout: New Vegas you're seeing what's essentially a colonial endeavor of the NCR. California itself is much more developed, especially as it annexed Vault City and San Francisco. The NCR has cars, trains, automobiles, limited power armor.
