What if you went to a different country and you had the face of a dead stranger (Maruzensky n Ferdinand. Irl shared a sire. Ferdinand was killed in a Japanese slaughterhouse) #umamusume

Middlesex was never swallowed up geographically. Most of it has been administered as part of Greater London since 1965, while places such as Sunbury and Ashford are administered separately. But those are council arrangements: all remain within the County of Middlesex. Whether somewhere “should” be in London is a separate question about modern administration - not about which county it is in. More info and detailed interactive map showing the legal boundaries of Middlesex and other geographic counties at RealCounties.com

Calling somewhere by its historic county is not nostalgia. It is geographical accuracy.

Tube Mapper - Luke Agbaimoni
Under Over Over Despite its name, the London Underground isn't always underground. This was taken at West Hampstead, where Underground trains pass above the London Overground. I've made it a mission to find every spot in London where this topsy-turvy railway quirk happens.

@RPMarks But for those who are blind or partially sighted, it's a total nightmare, until they can get machine that can interface and speak to customers and to listen and process the tickets, at the moment bear skins and flint at the moment with these.

On this day in 2002. Marylebone Station Master Donald Wilson shows off "Bill" and "Ben", two experimental ticket vending machines that were installed for trials. "Bill" on the left is an Ascom B8070 and "Ben" on the right is a Shere Fast Ticket. The latter won favour.

@MichaelDnes1 It took me 1h 30m to get from Crystal Palace to Stamford Hill, both Zone 3, both east London. It's embarrassing.

This is an amazing tool for exploring how spectacularly focused London transport is on journeys to the centre, and how much the rest of the city is far further away from its neighbours.
Neil Garratt AM@NeilGarratt

What does London's public transport map look like where you are? How do well-connected boroughs compare with their red-headed step-neighbours? And why do people in outer London own so many cars? Explore my interactive London Journey Times map to answer all these questions. 👇

@JoeBrownLondon It's interesting how the LNWR (and later LMS) decided to choose the same electrification system as the SR. I wonder if there were any plans to do something like a Harrow to Croydon service. (well that does exist now but the trains do not use the DC lines)

#OnThisDay 104 years ago the London & North Western Railway commenced DC electric services from Euston to Watford Junction with the opening of a third pair of tracks between Queens Park and Euston. Services were provided by Oerlikon units like this preserved at the NRM in York.

For a long while I thought it was just me colouring in the Baker Atlas. Delighted to hear others are at it. I’m using the 9th edition, 2001. I’ve just recently had to add the line to Barking Riverside to it and a few others will follow if I’m ever to complete it.
Ian Dinmore ACIRO 🇪🇺@Tarka_Man

@JoeBrownLondon @CrecyRail Sadly, my 1977 atlas was all coloured in, including the freight-only and a few mothballed lines (a benefit of working for BR). After that, I never did colour in any replacement atlas unless it was a new or reopened line.

They look better at night when they're running hot, literally hell machines, if demons had a method of transport it would 100.00% be something like this People paint steam trains as some quaint thing, but they are genuinely terrifying in scale of power
