My column from the @USCCB in Baltimore this week in @americamag When it mattered, the bishops came through. And maybe it’s time to retire (or at least update) a few narratives we have about division within the conference and with Rome americamagazine.org/news-analysis/…

This Plato will be a copy…a shadow, if you will, of the original Plato. Eventually, you will treat him as the real Plato, because he is the only reality you have ever known. And you will be very satisfied with this copy of Plato, and even find satisfaction in a world of copies
The American Conservative@amconmag

"Imagine a humanoid named Plato." Melania Trump says humanoid educators will offer "instantaneous" access to the classical studies for students and help create a "more complete person."

@jackcalifano Also if you get squished into the middle during rush hour there is nowhere to hold on. You just sway back and forth on your fellow passengers

Let the people of God feel some joy. Good God. Are we allowed to celebrate Easter in the presence of our crucified Lord or is that also inappropriate?

Even if you take the conservative defense of each ICE killing, you’re left with “We haphazardly scaled up a poorly trained police force to storm into neighborhoods that voted against the president, where we antagonize the local population until someone resists arrest, and then we kill them,” which is morally horrendous on top of being an absurd way to do immigration policy.

During Mass at a Catholic parish in a Minneapolis suburb this past Sunday, masked ICE agents parked outside and watched. Fr. Paul Haverstock said, "It felt like we were not living in the USA but in some third world, violent place, somewhere else.” ewtnnews.com/world/us/minne…

In the current context, we are seeing an actual “short circuit” of #HumanRights. The right to freedom of expression, freedom of conscience, religious freedom, and even the right to life are being restricted in the name of other so-called new rights, with the result that the very framework of human rights is losing its vitality and creating space for force and oppression. This occurs when each right becomes self-referential, and especially when it becomes disconnected from reality, nature, and truth.

Before the holy night of #Christmas, find one person with whom to make peace. This will be a more precious gift than any that can be bought, because peace is a gift found only in the heart.

#Christmas reminds us that God makes Himself known by drawing near to us, not in grandiose events or by revealing Himself from afar. God does not remain in some inaccessible heaven, but comes to meet us in the very heart of our ordinary lives. He shows us that daily life, just as it is, can become the place to encounter God.

@JLLiedl Was just thinking that I personally find it hard to object to this Nativity, which invokes a highly divisive political issue, that is produced by the Christians living today in the town where Jesus was born: bethlehemfairtrade.org/product/olive-…

@zacdayvis I’m not sure about the comment overall comment b/c, as you allude to, the Church’s public witness can often be divisive. My thought is that that specific example (or, similarly, a distinct exhibit related to the dignity of immigrants) is relevantly different from a nativity scene

Abp. Henning was on the drafting committee of the USCCB’s recent “special message” on immigration, so disregard for migrants clearly isn’t in play. Perhaps the concern is that while the Incarnation obviously has political implications, it isn’t reducible to them.
National Catholic Register@NCRegister

The archdiocese directed the Dedham parish to remove the display, but the pastor says it will stay in place as he seeks a meeting with Archbishop Richard Henning. ncregister.com/news/mcdonald-…

@Zheschool @JLLiedl I think if the manger were near the sanctuary and not outside, this might have more merit. That said, this is probably a judgement call and ++Henning making that judgement is certainly under his authority

@zacdayvis @JLLiedl I do think this is a little different. If you place a sign in the manger saying "sorry the baby was aborted" I think that would also be inappropriate. Seems to be about the particular means and expression.
