I made something useful (and fun!) in #threejs #webXR - something that lets you see a mirror of your actions - live or with a delay, or save it to a GLTF file to share, or use in a 3D tool. Check it out at zachernuk.neocities.org/2022/slow-mirr… (in Quest/etc) and read on for some observations!

Writing, with such freedom in place and scale, supplies a new dimension of meaning - maybe we can call it "reinforced concrete poetry." All this is meant as a story-starter, though. What do you want to see as text in space? What do you want to build? Let's chat.

Growing the original's wide expanse of white all aroudn you allows for surreal, otherworldly focus on the text. The speed and the scale of the words test the limit of conscious legibility, enhancing a sense that the poetry is absorbed as a *feeling* as much as read as a text.

In a world of spatial computing, what is the future of information? What is the Future of Text? Of poetry? In my spare time I used #threejs to revisit some of my favorite kinetic typography - video below, and link in the thread to experience it yourself:

I still read Quora Digest (yes unironically) from Alan Kay. One of the best things is to document yourself and live forever

@andy_matuschak @blisstweeting I *think* I can make my way to believing that it's because dusk is at the end of the day, which mean the earth has rotated, which means that the point you're 'tightest' at has shifted in the year.

@blisstweeting Yeah, I bottom out in a similar spot. Feels too hand-wave-y for me. Noodled a bit with a 3D astronomy viz, but still don't really follow.

This is huge for 3D on the web as well! If you or your organization wants to show products, configure 3D stuff or even do spatial web visualization, please join AOUSD and the Web Interest Group to hear about what people are doing, and give input on how to make USD work for you!

If you're interested in USD - and especially USD on the web, like in Quick Look and the 3D <model> element - this is the place for you! Joining AOUSD lets you help shape the future of the format and everything that happens with it.

@yishan The promotional shots are also taken with a much wider lens and at eye-level with the midline of the burger. Again not to excuse Arby’s but people’s inability to read the difference about this is having people cut into their own (face) meats: utsouthwestern.edu/newsroom/artic…

Arby’s got sued for using falsely delicious images in their advertising and I pointed out that the photos should first be adjusted to match based on the lighting differences in order to make an airtight case that the food is clearly different (and it still is once you do it) but many people are too stupid to understand this. I am primarily eager to see how this affects the rest of fast food advertising but secondarily, omg people are morons who don’t know how to compare things.
Yishan@yishan

@RobertFreundLaw The images are not tinted equally. It would be more accurate to use this (I am matching the tint based on the bread color). They can still make their argument, even with this comparison.

@maskys_ It's such an interesting exercise! This one isn't an especially good job, but looking for the analogs between screen real estate and floor-space, what seeing others in a space does, and the implicit "fanciness" of surfaces is really provocative: youtube.com/watch?v=tMr33z…

@OhAnotherAlt And to be fit for that purpose! So often expert practitioners fail to recognize the value of providing some functionality and simply *getting out of the way.* That's my hope with what we're offering here: youtube.com/watch?v=KhmQDk…
