@cocktailpeanut yeah they do but it looks like it's geared more towards the last 90 days vs what's happening right now

@zachoverflow @huggingface Thanks -- starting to see some other reports as well. Website is spotty...but downloading anything off the hub just times out for me.

I think many folks underestimate how much time codebase style matching saves. New folks need to learn it = ramp up time If your coding assistant gets it wrong = editing time And if wrong style makes it to code review = back and forth time

Excited to see @augmentcode launch today! We switched from Github Copilot at @lmnt_com earlier this year because Augment is way faster (like…3x faster) and generates higher quality completions that match our own codebase style - haven't looked back.

AI coding tools are everywhere. Yet they all fall short when scaling to 100s of developers and complex codebases. We’re solving this problem @augmentcode. Introducing Augment Code, the first developer AI purpose-built for teams.🧵

@guillemsimeon @pfau or like the time I wasted a whole day trying to work with an esoteric ffmpeg API; docs were trash and their examples didn't compile. and then an LLM got me 80% there. A++ would rather spend cycles on interesting originality :p

I'm basically 0% worried about being left behind if I don't use LLMs for programming. There are people out there who still use vim who are 10x better programmers than the rest of us.

guessing it's probably 2; folks shipping vertical SoC/phone combos (Apple, Google) have more investing patience than generic SoC providers on Android Wear we were stuck with >4 year old chips (and worse battery life) because there wasn't enough money in the market for Qualcomm to justify SoC revs each year

One of my favorite things about designing software is designing the defaults. The defaults define the experience for everyone out of the box. And, therefore, for most people in perpetuity. Convention over configuration rules the day. To me, everything it could possibly do is less interesting than what it does right now, factory fresh. At 37signals we call this The Golden Path and we discuss it often. If a customer followed our lead, stayed in the grooves, and did exactly as the software suggested, what would that experience be like? That's the one nearly everyone will have, so making it great is our top priority. Certainly some will take the path least traveled. Others will head to whatever gear icon they can find and start turning the dials and pulling the levers. And then there are those who enjoy figuring out how to break things by imagining every exception or edge case, and seeing how the app handles it. It's great to have these customers too! But they aren't the ones that pay the bills. Most buy something they just want to work. Configuration is a drag, not a desire. Setting something up brings them down. They just want their struggle out of the way, and choosing and buying the thing was the majority of the work they signed up for. The rest should just glide. Defaults aren't just about nailing The Golden Path, it's also about choosing one. What experience do we want people to have? What opinions do we want to carve into the product? It's not just what we're trying to do, it's what we're trying to say. So if you really want to know what a company thinks about their product, their customer, and the experience they imagine is the best one, just roll with the stock product. Don't mess with it, use it as is. That's the best way to know what something's really like, what was intended, and experience a pure point of view.

@ID_AA_Carmack @fuglypirate Disagree, LLMs are modelling language on the societal scale, not the individual scale. I haven't done the math but if we consider the human equivalent to be the food/chemical energy consumed by all of humanity since the invention of language, we're probably still off by a few OOM

I feel a touch of sadness knowing that my deep knowledge of the Quest internals is slowly aging out of relevance as things evolve (Justin is still fighting the good fight to improve things). Similarly, it is over a decade since I worked in AAA gaming, and I know many core components look quite different today. My aerospace knowledge has probably held up the best — physics hasn’t changed, and the available technologies evolve much slower than in software fields. Onward to AGI… (no, I do t have anything interesting to share yet)
John Carmack@ID_AA_Carmack

Is the GPU low priority setting being used now? It wasn’t when I left — I had suggested that classic Android apps have it forced on them, but that would have to be done on the OS side. The preemption works well for the high priority compositor, so I assume it would also work well for shell over panels. The ideal thing to do would be to monitor the free GPU time and drop the frame rate from 90 to 72 if panel apps were getting completely starved of rendering time. Shell env and overlay also both need to simultaneously have SCHED_FIFO to guaranteed panels can’t hold them up, which I don’t think is the case.
