I have not heard a good argument for why Melee tournaments shouldn't be played on monitors when it's more convenient. I personally am all for it. With a Wii and the lag reduction code it's totally fine.

@zagnesICT @upgamer_Nicki To get more accurate results, I have been using various sheets of paper of differing thickness in front of the light sensor to reduce the sensitivity to hit a more accurate measurement on the curve. Time sleuth is more suited for signal chain testing and emissive displays.

@zagnesICT @upgamer_Nicki I have a time sleuth and its one of my favorite tools I own, but its not an effective means of accurately portraying latency of LCD technology specifically due to its shallow transition curve. You cannot set the threshold, and it triggers extremely early on the curve

@TheXIF @upgamer_Nicki I use LCDs at locals + a regional, and I have a device to measure display lag of any LCDs used at my events. I've found that if the average display lag is ~9ms it's competitively viable but you need the Slippi lag reduction codes no matter what. docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d…

@upgamer_Nicki This is one of those things where without any evidence or numbers to back it, I am firmly in the camp of “it just don’t feel right” and I’ll probably always feel that way even if it won’t stop me from playing. Monitor Melee is like a boneless Melee idk

@upgamer_Nicki My locals have used gaming LCDs since early 2023 and I haven’t looked back. It’s an investment, but so worth it for me personally. CRT lag ≈ 8.33ms
Good LCD ≈ 9ms I’ve tested LCDs with ~16ms (1f) lag (won’t use those), but good LCDs + lag reduction codes are seriously great.
