@vtchakarova Government and institutions not prepared is quite the understatement. They are either actively or/or passively participating in creating the crisis.

@RealBeanie__ @nixcraft Well there are at least two reasons : Brazil and California. But anyway, it's simply an optional field. Right now it matters only to the Brazilian/California Linux community. The real fight is yet to come, and it's not gonna be in systemd at all.

systemd lost the plot a long time ago. they stopped following the Unix philosophy and now they're busy adding nonsense like age verification. Just like Firefox, systemd doesn't understand its core user base. There are plenty of distros without systemd

@Libertarian1777 @nixcraft Yeah, that will be the worst case scenario really. I think someone who understands this law should clarify.

@zarrro @nixcraft IMHO it’s going to require comms between some server and client computers to implement, otherwise software side can be end run in a variety of ways. And that’s the reason I believe this is designed to target foss os/software.

@Silverplate_Sun @nixcraft Yeah, never heard it's called hanlon's razer but I agree it's a lie. But also I think the main problem is gonna be elsewhere, like os installer or whatever. This field is irrelevant, because if it doesn't exists its just gonna be another file in /etc.

@zarrro @nixcraft You give in, even an inch, even once, and they will take and take and take until they get what they want. Hanlon's razor is a lie. They are evil and malicious. It's an optional field now. Next year, it'll be required. In a few years, you have to have your ID on file.

@Libertarian1777 @nixcraft Yes, but if you think about the age verification thing - if it gets implemented it's not gonna be in systemd. You simply can't do it there, it's gonna be in the os installer. While I think you are corect about the slippery slope, I think the main balttle will be elsewhere.

@gl0wing5 @nixcraft Yeah, sure. There are bugs. Like every other software that exists. But the desktop and especially laptop experience of a Linux systems has dramatically improved since the mass adoption of systemd.

@zarrro @nixcraft systemd-resolved is garbage. Udev sucks too. Had problems with both of them repeatedly on different laptops and different distros.

@oxcrowx Because this notion of complex vs simple langues is false dichotomy. When you are solving complex problems, you need complexity. The choice actually is, whether you will rely on the tools of the language to manage it OR you are going to be rolling your own solutions.

To me, there are only few modern languages that can be called simple: Odin, Austral, OCaml, Scheme, Lua, C3, and Go. Most other widely loved / used languages like Rust, Zig, C++ etc. are fairly complex. Now the dilemma is: Users seem to prefer the complex languages more. Why?

@lxnalang What do you mean silence from the rest of the world? Everyone know about the genocide? USA and the so called West are fine with it, and fully support it. The rest of the world is against, but also doesn't want world war over this. So here we are...

seeing posts like this from Palestinians is so unsettling. they are exhausting their energy trying to get the world to listen, even if it means turning their own suffering into something the algorithm will notice. the silence of the rest of the world is unbearably deafening.

@valigo I think most people using/contributing to FOSS understand this very well. Every approach to building large complex software has its drawbacks and inefficiencies. And the longer the project is developed the bigger they get.

Truth nuke. I use Linux full time for over a decade, and this is the truest take on package management. Infinite amount of human hours wasted on slightly different ways of copying and removing files in "correct" folders. This is because in Linux, new thing is never just better than the old thing. It's always better in one way, and worse in other ways, so instead of switching to the new thing you just get more fragmentation. In Linux, you design an incompetent half-assed new thing by committee. And then it takes 15 years to get to a state where a bit over half users of the old thing can comfortably switch to it, and you stop at that, in hopes that the other half of the users die of old age.
Q@qtnx_

my hottest take is the linux model of package managing is insane in the modern age projects like firefox should not be handled by random package maintainers for every distro, it makes sense to download from the mozilla website imo why linux will never take off on the desktop

Claude Code wiped our production database with a Terraform command. It took down the DataTalksClub course platform and 2.5 years of submissions: homework, projects, and leaderboards. Automated snapshots were gone too. In the newsletter, I wrote the full timeline + what I changed so this doesn't happen again. If you use Terraform (or let agents touch infra), this is a good story for you to read. alexeyondata.substack.com/p/how-i-droppe…

🚨 Eva Schloss, Anne Frank's stepsister, casually tells Piers Morgan the famous Auschwitz liberation photos were staged weeks later with actors. no cameras when the Russians arrived, no snow, pure propaganda setup. Piers panics and deflects, but the damage is done: the story we've been sold is propped on fakes.

😁 The Embassy of Iran in China shared a Chinese song from 60 years ago, and it suddenly went viral. Most Chinese people born after the 1970s had almost never heard it before. The reason it became popular is that the lyrics perfectly reflect the actions of the United States.

Remember that California law which will require *all* Operating Systems to implement age verification by Jan 1, 2027? Well, Brazil has a similar law. And it takes effect on March 17th... two weeks from now. Brazilian Law No. 15,211 (Passed September 17, 2025) will require age verification for *all* Operating Systems (Windows, Mac, Linux, etc.) on March 17th, 2026. The penalty, per failure to comply, is R$50 million (roughly $9.5 Million USD) per infraction. planalto.gov.br/ccivil_03/_ato…
