These are the stories of animals harmed by Russia’s war in Ukraine - ones I have written about over the years. Sadly, there are many more. Do you remember them? Which story stayed with you the most?

Anton Poliukhovych, a 25-year-old Ukrainian Defender known by the callsign 'Umnik' (The Scholar), died defending Ukraine. Anton served in the 'Jesus Christ Company' of the 'Bratstvo' (Brotherhood) Christian Volunteer Battalion, under the Ukrainian Defense Intelligence. Before the full-scale war, Anton was a student. Prior to his military service, he became interested in chaplaincy and began volunteering. Later, Anton joined the 'Bratstvo' Patronage Service, eventually becoming a Defender and rising to a leadership position. Anton participated in raids across the Kakhovka Reservoir and was awarded the Order 'For Courage.' During a sabotage mission to the opposite bank of the Kakhovka Reservoir, Anton and his group neutralized an Russian reconnaissance unit and captured two high-value Russian soldiers. Committing horrific war crimes on the eve of a Christian holiday or on the day itself is an “unchanging tradition” for russian war criminals.

Russians put a $150,000 bounty on reconnaissance sergeant Oleksandr Kusharyev — callsign "Zelenyi." His unit had just killed a Pacific Fleet intelligence colonel on a Dnipro island. Russian channels mourned the loss at length. When Zeleny found out about the bounty, he waited until his unit was withdrawing from another successful mission, keyed the radio — knowing the enemy was listening — and said: "Orcs, greetings from Zeleny." Twenty minutes later, two motorboats of Russian assault troops came. They were met with heavy fire. He held the Dnipro islands that looked like nothing on a map and everything in war. He liberated Nestrыha in the Dnipro delta on 28 April 2024. He sank at least two Russian assault boats himself with a Browning heavy machine gun. He was wounded twice in 2024 — once so badly that shrapnel nearly split his leg open — and returned both times. In the summer of 2024, between wounds, he took his son Ruslan to the Carpathians. They rode rollercoasters in Bukovel. His wife Sofia says she will never forget them coming home: "Happy. We savored every minute." On 27 April 2025, he recorded a TikTok from somewhere near the front: "When I die, they won't write that an entire era ended." He was killed on 9 June 2025 near Vuhledar. He was 36. Ruslan is 12. Sofia received his posthumous commendation on 24 February 2026 — the fourth anniversary of the full-scale invasion. Eternal memory. Photo: family archive / Ukrinform

⚡️ Egypt will no longer accept grain stolen by Russian from the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine. This was announced by President Zelenskyy following a conversation with the President of Egypt.

⚡️ Ukraine has successfully rescued seven children from Russian occupation. One rescued teenager had been repeatedly blocked from leaving. After losing a parent, he was placed under illegal guardianship, had his phone confiscated, and was subjected to psychological pressure and intimidation. The rescue was coordinated via the @BringKidsBackUA initiative. The initiative thanked U.S. First Lady Melania Trump (@FLOTUS) for her personal attention and support in helping return these children to their families.
