Low-cost scanning of fresh soils can reduce up to 40% of the project cost and deliver reliable results with the same statistical confidence. Paper with public access is available on this link: lnkd.in/ep32VqDg

Very excited to have this out (and in Nature Geoscience, no less!). We returned to in-field incubations of isotopically enriched litter and pyrogenic OM ten years after inception, and were able to glean some insights into the persistence patterns of the SOM that was formed.

Demais, confesso.

Identifying optimal organic matter levels is challenging because, with management, ag soils can function with low SOM levels. Choosing an optimal level of soil organic matter by comparing it to similar soils/climate/land cover just sidesteps the question "how much is enough?"

Soil organic carbon (SOC) is a key #soilhealth metric, but identifying optimal SOC contents can be challenging Researchers have developed a new assessment method, which could help EU policymakers target increases in SOC to improve soil health Learn more: ai4soilhealth.eu/a-new-approach…

For Dr. Nigel Golden, Research Scientist and Climate Justice Specialist at Woodwell Climate, making climate science just and equitable is akin to watching an ecosystem evolve over time. 🌱 Read Golden’s essay on our Climate Justice Committee: ow.ly/YtNb50TChWc

Many uncertainty quantification tools have severe problems: Bootstrapping -> underestimates variance Quantile regression -> undercoverage Probabilities -> miscalibrated Bayesian posteriors -> easily misspecified A way to fix these short-coming: conformal prediction

I'm so excited to finally introduce Fields of The World (FTW!) - the largest & most diverse ML dataset for field instance segmentation in satellite images. FTW has >70k samples from 24 countries (4 continents), with semantic & instance labels + Sentinel-2 RGB-NIR from 2 dates. 🧵
