Starting next week, consumers that want to use Claude Fable 5 will need to pay usage-based fees to access the model, on top of a subscription—a first for the industry. Anthropic says this is temporary due to "capacity", but I argue the golden era of AI subscriptions is ending.

Many tech leaders balk at Anthropic's prices and strategy, but people can't get enough of their models. One of my sources here hit the nail on the head: “The interesting dynamic happening right now is that no one wants to ask the question, ‘do I need the best intelligence for this task?’ ... More often, when choosing what AI model to use, people are asking themselves, ‘Am I the kind of person who needs mid-level intelligence, or the best?’"

While reporting a feature on OpenAI's Codex team back in February, the company was already talking about building the product that came to be known as the super app (excerpt below from that story). It seems like they've shipped the first glimpse of that today, roughly five months later. Also notable how much safety work went into it, given the concerns raised by Altman here in the product's nascent days.

I was clearly wrong about Anthropic. They are obviously currently the leader in AI. No company has released a model as good as Mythos/Fable and they will undoubtedly have Mythos 2 ready soon. And I would never cut them off in a way that hurt them badly, even as a competitor. That’s not my style. Tesla open sourced its patents and we made the Supercharger network available to all competitors, even though we could have made it a walled garden. SpaceX launches competing satellite systems with no increase in price or use of unfair terms. Even my worst enemies can attack me on this platform. …
