@Chloe_in_pink I met someone our age—a media professional at that—who once said they didn't see the point in restoring old movies in HD. Their assumption about how old films couldn't possibly look good makes me think we forgot how good film always looked—and the HD generation might remember.

@Chloe_in_pink I've wondered about this myself, but I also wonder if home video might change it. Our generation's first B&W experiences were on CRT TVs, which can make any old movie feel mustier. Now, youngsters can watch them on setups where CASABLANCA is as sharp as if it were shot yesterday

Someone tell me that it's silly to fly to Nashville for two days so I can go see Bob Dylan play. It's silly. Right?

@TomiLaffly A Neon-distributed film getting a big prize is now a Cannes tradition, but I worry that James Gray getting screwed over is an even bigger Cannes tradition.

PAPER TIGER might be James Gray’s best film. Definitely my favorite of his along with TWO LOVERS. I hope he does not leave #Cannes empty-handed.

@SophyRomvari Ang Lee and Whit Stillman were pushing 40 when they started to direct. Claire Denis debuted past 40. Bunuel had made 3 avant-garde shorts/featurettes in his 20s and 30s, but didn't really start directing feature films until he was almost 50. And, of course, Manoel de Oliveira.

Resist the sad trap of seeing fellow filmmakers as a point of comparison or competition. People become obsessed w/ timelines and milestones, but the truth is filmmaking is a long road w/ no clear path for anyone. The only thing that will make you a filmmaker is making films.

One of my biggest pieces of advise as a filmmaker is that it’s so incredibly important to have other filmmakers in your life with whom you can commiserate and look up to — it’s a very special and necessary type of support and guidance.

@swen_ryan The fact that STRAY DOG didn't open here until after HIGH AND LOW may explain why I've found it so underrated

@BohemiaStable @nikgroz Considering that he got a prostate exam for David Cronenberg, got ravished in his sleep for Claire Denis, and ended up with excrement on his face for Robert Eggers, all for one shred of the arthouse cred the world gave K-Stew the moment she teamed with Assayas, he's earned it.

@BilgeEbiri The sanest DUNKIRK take is that finally someone came along who didn't want you to have to choose between SAVING PRIVATE RYAN and THE THIN RED LINE

@swen_ryan I was, sadly, one of only two people at my screening of CLOUD at the Nuart, but something is super fitting about Kiyoshi Kurosawa to watch his films both in public and essentially alone
