Ok, this is going to trigger a few people. NYC is not a pretty city. It’s very harsh, its architecture unromantic compared to European capitals, its infrastructure aged and tired. Midtown is just gross let’s be honest. The subway is always dirty and smells terrible. It’s not surrounded by awe-inspiring nature like SF. The food scene is good that’s bc it has a big international population. But tbh it’s very mid. It’s impressive to your average American from a small town or city bc the country is so sparse. It’s really not that impressive to someone who’s lived in international cosmopolitans. I think that every day when I commute to work.

I hate all east asian writers because of their abuse of this cheap trick. The purposeful Othering of yourself is such an overplayed pathos, kind of like how in comedy, the default routine is always to go with some sort of self deprecation of your own race if you happen to be an immigrant.
